India Needs to Reevaluate Scheduling of Major Examinations Amidst Heatwaves

The CSR Journal Magazine

The current examination period in India is becoming increasingly challenging for students as they are often subjected to extreme heat conditions. Examinations, including NEET, JEE, UPSC, and CUET, are typically held from April to June, coinciding with the highest temperatures of the year. Students frequently endure long waits outside examination centres, often under a scorching sun without adequate facilities. Such scenarios can lead to physical exhaustion even before they enter the exam halls.

Reports indicate that temperatures in several regions can soar above 45°C, significantly impacting students’ focus and performance. With millions of aspirants travelling from various states for these high-stakes tests, the exposure to oppressive heat exacerbates the stress and challenges already inherent in competitive examinations.

Many students have raised concerns regarding these conditions during their examinations, reporting issues like power failures, poor ventilation, and overcrowded exam halls. These factors can distract students and impair their performance at a time when their results are crucial for their future educational and career paths.

Impact of Extreme Heat on Examination Performance

Extreme heat conditions can have a detrimental effect on cognitive function. Research has highlighted various ways excessive heat can hinder a student’s ability to concentrate, retain information, and respond effectively during examinations. As the stress and fatigue increase, students may face difficulties in maintaining their performance over the duration of the tests.

Avinash Agarwal, Director of Disha Publication, has pointed out that examinations should assess a student’s preparation and problem-solving skills, not their endurance in adverse weather conditions. The current examination infrastructure often lacks provisions that consider the impact of extreme temperatures on student performance, raising concerns about fairness and practicality during the examination process.

The ongoing debate underscores the need for a systematic reform of the examination scheduling to align it better with the current climate realities. This could decrease the adverse effects of heat exposure on student performance and overall well-being, thereby ensuring a more equitable testing environment.

Proposals for Revision of Exam Scheduling

In response to the challenges faced, some education administrators are advocating for a change in the academic calendar. Suggestions have emerged to shift major examinations to the September–January window, which would likely provide more favourable weather conditions. This adjustment could minimise heat-related stress and create a more conducive atmosphere for students to perform at their best.

Commodore S.R. Sridhar (Retd), Registrar at IIIT-Bangalore, has proposed a model that separates the academic learning cycle from high-pressure testing periods. Such a shift could aid in reducing the overwhelming pressures students face and allow adequate time for revision while avoiding extreme summer conditions.

However, transitioning to a new examination schedule poses logistical challenges. National exams are closely linked to academic timelines, and any modifications would require coordinated planning to avoid conflicts with monsoon disruptions prevalent in various states. Education officials acknowledge that synchronising exam schedules and expediting evaluations will be vital to overcome these obstacles.

As climate conditions continue to shift, there is growing recognition that the examination framework in India may need significant changes. This conversation has gained urgency as the implications of extreme weather on students’ learning experiences cannot be ignored. The prioritisation of student health and performance standards will be crucial in reshaping the examination landscape.
