India has initiated one of the largest teacher training programmes globally, focusing on Artificial Intelligence. Named ‘AI Literacy for Teachers’, the programme aspires to educate over one million teachers by the year 2027. This initiative is aimed at incorporating AI into the everyday educational experience, making it a core aspect of classroom instruction rather than an optional resource.

Launched by Bodhan AI, a Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, the announcement was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during the IIT Madras Technology Summit at Bharat Mandapam on 5 May 2026. The initiative seeks to radically transform the teaching landscape in India.

Transforming Teaching Methods

The programme intends to consistently integrate AI into educational practices, providing teachers with essential training in various areas. This includes aspects such as lesson planning, content creation, student assessments, and feedback systems.

By positioning AI as a daily teaching assistant, the initiative aims to enhance educators’ efficiency and effectiveness. The focus is on making AI a fundamental part of teaching workflows across all schools in India, thereby improving both the quality of education and learning outcomes.

Minister Pradhan emphasised that this initiative is crucial for promoting a future-ready education system. He remarked that training one million teachers would not only represent a significant scale but also lay the groundwork for a responsible and ethical AI ecosystem in alignment with India’s long-term educational objectives.

Building a Robust AI Ecosystem

Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, highlighted that India’s diverse and expansive demographic necessitates the customised adaptation of technology to enhance teaching quality. He believes that AI literacy among educators is pivotal for meaningful integration within classrooms.

Dr Mitesh Khapra, Principal Investigator at Bodhan AI, added that the aim is to make AI a reliable collaborator for every instructor in India. This initiative is expected to alleviate teachers’ burdens while simultaneously enhancing student engagement.

The literacy programme is designed to significantly alleviate teachers’ workload and enhance education quality through various methods, including AI-based lesson planning, content generation, automated evaluation of student responses, multilingual translation tools, and administrative support systems. Consequently, the initiative strives to establish a fully integrated AI-enabled educational ecosystem.

Implementation Plan and Future Steps

The rollout of this comprehensive AI literacy initiative will occur in phases, commencing with pilot testing in the forthcoming months. The first public cohort is anticipated to begin on Teachers’ Day, 5 September 2026. Subsequently, the initiative aims to expand rapidly to reach its target of training one million teachers by 2027.

This programme will be executed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Union Ministry of Education, Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and individual state governments, along with partner institutions. The collaborative effort is expected to facilitate the successful integration of AI into the educational framework.
