India Formally Pitches Ahmedabad to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

The CSR Journal Magazine

India has formally presented its proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad, projecting the city as the venue for the centenary celebrations of the global sporting event. The presentation took place in London before the Evaluation Committee of Commonwealth Sport, with Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha leading the delegation.

The 2030 edition holds a special importance, marking 100 years since the beginning of the Commonwealth Sport Movement. India’s proposal places Ahmedabad at the heart of this milestone, backed by sporting infrastructure, metro connectivity and modern accommodation facilities that could support thousands of athletes and officials expected at the event.

The Bid and Its Vision

The Gujarat government described Ahmedabad’s offer as compact, efficient and forward looking. It emphasised that the city’s international-standard venues, smooth transport systems and accommodation networks could ensure smooth conduct of the Games. A statement noted, “Aligned with the Games Reset principles, the proposal emphasises affordability, inclusivity, flexibility and sustainability.”

The proposal also highlighted India’s promise to integrate para-sport, protect human rights, uphold gender equity, and develop a legacy that carries benefits beyond the fortnight of competition. The vision is not just about sport, but about embedding long-lasting community benefits across India and the wider Commonwealth.

Leaders on India’s Global Role

Minister Harsh Sanghavi described the bid as an opportunity for India to step forward on the world stage at a historic moment. “Hosting the Centenary Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad will be a proud milestone, not just for Gujarat but for India. We see these Games as a catalyst to inspire our youth, accelerate our journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047, and strengthen the Commonwealth Movement for the next 100 years,” he said.

Echoing this sentiment, PT Usha pointed to both tradition and transformation. “India’s bid is not just about capability, but about values. Ahmedabad is ready to pick up the baton from Glasgow 2026 and act as a springboard to the 2034 Games, ensuring that the centenary edition honours the past while shaping the future of Commonwealth Sport,” she remarked.

Capability To Legacy

The joint efforts of the Union government, the Gujarat administration and the Commonwealth Games Association of India have been central to this proposal. Officials underlined that India intends to deliver Games that are compact, sustainable, inclusive and globally impactful. This is also seen as a key chance to enhance India’s reputation as a dependable host for other international sporting events in the coming decades.

The Ahmedabad Games, if awarded, would be only the second time India hosts the Commonwealth Games. The first was in Delhi in 2010, an event remembered for its scale, successes and challenges. Now, the officials are confident that lessons learned from past experiences, combined with new infrastructure and governance models, will help India deliver a stronger and more efficient performance.

The decision on the host for the 2030 Games will be taken after a round of evaluations and deliberations by the Commonwealth Sport authorities.
