India Braces for Early Summer Temperatures Ahead of Holi

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is anticipating an unusually early summer as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of notable increases in temperatures. By the first week of March, various regions across the country are likely to witness temperatures that are typically observed much later in the season. The transition from a mild winter to a warm spring appears to be occurring more rapidly than usual.

Projected Temperature Surges Across Regions

The IMD forecasts maximum temperatures to climb by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the plains of Northwest and Central India in the next few days. Independent weather analyst Navdeep Dahiya has indicated that the first week of March will signal an early onset of summer, coinciding with the festive celebrations of Holi. He anticipates that temperature deviations may reach 5 to 10 degrees Celsius above the normal levels in certain areas.

Causes Behind the Early Temperature Rise

A range of atmospheric factors is contributing to this swift rise in temperature. The IMD notes that maximum temperatures are already 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above average in states such as Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi. Dahiya explains this phenomenon as a result of the lack of active western disturbances, combined with the strengthening of an anti-cyclonic circulation over Western India. While a weak western disturbance may bring light snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir between March 4 and 6, it is unlikely to provide any substantial relief from the heat.

Weather Conditions During Holi Celebrations

As the nation gears up for Holi on March 4, warmer weather conditions are anticipated. The IMD predicts that day temperatures in Northwest India could reach between 35 degrees Celsius, which is 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year. Dahiya also forecasts that some regions in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh may experience the first temperature peaks of up to 40 degrees Celsius between March 4 and 10. In North India, temperatures are expected to soar to around 39 degrees Celsius in Rajasthan post-Holi, with no significant relief indicated for the first two weeks of March.
