The INDIA bloc has united to call for the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This decision follows a meeting held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, during which leaders expressed concerns over recent electoral processes. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced a series of protests slated to take place from October 2 to October 8 across the nation, asserting the bloc’s commitment to safeguarding democratic principles.

Kharge stated that opposition members plan to march to the Election Commission on October 6 and will meet President Droupadi Murmu in the following week to discuss concerns regarding institutional integrity. He emphasised the perceived threats to the democratic framework, highlighting issues related to electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.

The joint statement from the bloc outlined several demands, including the reinstatement of previous electoral rolls and a reinstatement of ballot paper voting. Allegations of election rigging were raised, with Congress general secretary KC Venugopal claiming that the integrity of the electoral process is at risk.

BJP Responds to Opposition Allegations

The BJP has refuted these demands, labelling the INDIA bloc’s stance as a display of frustration following electoral defeat. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan challenged the opposition’s claims, suggesting that their assertions about manipulated elections reflect a reaction to their losses rather than substantive concerns.

Chouhan questioned the credibility of the allegations, pointing out that the Congress had won elections in several states and implying that their claims lack substance.
