Abhijeet Dipke Criticises Govt for Detaining Protesters Amid Anti-CEC Demonstrations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhijeet Dipke, an activist from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has accused the Indian government of detaining protesters and opposition leaders in a bid to protect Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Dipke highlighted the ongoing protests by students and youth in Delhi, which have persisted for the past ten to fifteen days.

He claimed that these individuals have been forcibly removed from the streets, and the situation escalated when opposition leaders joined the demonstrations. According to Dipke, notable figures such as former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee, Arvind Kejriwal, and Pinarayi Vijayan were among those detained. He expressed concern over the government’s actions, questioning the rationale behind such measures.

“All this for whom? For one man, Gyanesh Kumar,” he stated, emphasising the perceived disproportionate response to the protests. Dipke further alleged that the government suspended railway services following a protest call on October 10, claiming this was an unprecedented move in the nation’s history. He noted that the situation worsened as Metro services were also halted and stations across Delhi were closed. Dipke suggested that these actions were taken solely to safeguard Gyanesh Kumar’s position.

Concerns Over Media Treatment During Protests

Neha Bora, a leader and activist from the All India Students’ Association, also voiced her concerns regarding the treatment of journalists covering the protests. During the press conference, she condemned the authorities for detaining journalists and allegedly subjecting them to harassment. Bora stated that reporters were held for extended periods and faced physical abuse, despite possessing valid press credentials.

“We witnessed instances where cameras were forcibly taken from journalists, with threats that they would not be returned if they continued to cover the events,” she remarked. Bora accused the police of favouring a specific political party and failing to uphold their duty to maintain public order. She called for accountability and respect for the rights of journalists in the face of increasing tensions.

The treatment of media personnel during the protests has raised significant concerns about press freedom in India. Journalists have reported instances of intimidation and violence while attempting to cover the unfolding events. This situation has led to widespread criticism from various quarters, including civil society organisations and political leaders.

Upcoming Demonstration at Central Park

In light of the ongoing unrest and government actions, the CJP and allied organisations have announced a planned demonstration at Central Park in Connaught Place, Delhi, on Saturday. Participants are encouraged to wave the national flag as a symbol of solidarity and protest against the government’s measures to suppress dissent.

This upcoming event aims to galvanise public support and raise awareness about the issues surrounding the protests and the treatment of both demonstrators and journalists. Organisers hope to draw attention to the broader implications of the government’s response to civil unrest and the importance of safeguarding democratic rights.

As the situation continues to evolve, both the government and the opposition are under scrutiny regarding their handling of the protests and the associated media coverage. The outcome of the planned demonstration may further influence public sentiment and political dynamics in the coming days.
