India Awaits Quieter Thursday After Stormy Weather

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is set to experience a calmer Thursday following several days of intense hailstorms, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall caused by an active Western disturbance. Most regions will benefit from a temporary reprieve from inclement weather, although the northeastern part of the country is expected to remain wet.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that the current weather system is approaching its final phase, allowing for clearer skies in many areas. While the plains are expected to experience improved weather conditions, the northeast will continue to face challenges.

In particular, significant rainfall is anticipated in the northeastern states, which may follow the calmer weather observed in other regions. As the storms wane, the national focus shifts to the implications of these weather changes.

Forecast for Delhi

For Delhi on February 1, 2025, clear skies are forecasted, according to the IMD. The maximum temperature is anticipated to reach between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will hover between 14 and 16 degrees Celsius, which is notably below average for this time of year.

Northeasterly winds, with speeds reaching up to 16 kilometres per hour, are expected in the afternoon, becoming stronger in the evening. The recent cool temperatures mark the coldest April day in three years for the region, contributing to this brief spell of chill.

A gradual increase in temperatures is anticipated starting from Friday, indicating a shift in the climatic conditions experienced thus far this week.

Conditions in Northeast India and Surrounding Regions

Northeast India, however, will not be as fortunate, with the IMD predicting widespread light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching 30 to 50 kilometres per hour. Heavy rainfall is especially expected in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura on February 1.

Potential hailstorms are also a risk in Meghalaya, making agricultural impacts a consideration for this region. Meanwhile, other parts such as West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar will encounter scattered rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and wind gusts. The intensity of these weather events will be markedly lower than those experienced in previous days.

The forecast for these areas reflects a transition period after a tumultuous weather pattern, with indications that conditions will steadily improve in the coming days.

Temperature Trends and Agricultural Advice

Temperatures in northwest India are expected to rise sharply in the forthcoming days, anticipating an increase of eight to ten degrees Celsius from February 1 to 14. Central India will likely see an upward shift of three to five degrees Celsius, while East India is poised for a rise of four to six degrees Celsius beginning February 10.

Farmers have faced significant damage to wheat crops due to recent weather, particularly in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has urged farmers to expedite the harvesting of mature crops and store them securely to protect against further adverse conditions.

Other recommendations include the installation of hail nets in orchards to shield crops, draining excess rainwater from fields, and ensuring livestock remains indoors during inclement weather. These proactive measures are crucial for safeguarding agricultural produce moving forward.
