IMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Hailstorms in Northwest India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Northwest India is set to experience significant weather changes as several atmospheric disturbances affect the region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a notable alert for April 4, 2026, indicating a combination of heavy rainfall and widespread hailstorms. Over the next 24 hours, these weather systems are anticipated to peak, impacting areas stretching from the Himalayan region down to the plains.

A substantial western disturbance is currently crossing the border, contributing to atmospheric instability in the northern states. As a result, residents in the National Capital Region, including Delhi, Gurgaon, and Noida, are advised to prepare for moderate rain, heightened thunderstorms, and increased lightning activity.

The IMD warns of potential thundersqualls with wind gusts reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour in cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, and parts of Punjab. These conditions may lead to temporary disruptions and pose risks from falling debris.

Areas Expected to Experience Hail

The threat of hail remains considerable for several areas across northwest India. Isolated hailstorm activity has been forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. In the plains, regions including Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan are also on alert for similar conditions.

Additionally, central India, particularly regions in East Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, may witness comparable storm patterns. Meanwhile, the northeastern states, particularly Arunachal Pradesh, are expected to receive heavy rainfall as well.

Local authorities and residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant, as the combination of rainfall and hail could result in challenging conditions, affecting transportation and daily activities.

Forecast for Temperature Changes

Despite the ominous storm forecast, there are indications of a welcomed dip in temperatures, especially for those experiencing the onset of the summer heat. Maximum temperatures across northwest India are expected to decrease by three to five degrees Celsius.

In Delhi, temperatures are predicted to range between 29 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius, significantly below seasonal norms. This cooling effect is likely to persist into the first week of April, providing a necessary break from the heat.

Such a change in temperature could offer relief to residents, while also potentially impacting patterns of crop development and agricultural activities in the region. As the weather systems evolve, continuous monitoring will be essential to ensure public safety and preparedness.
