IIT Kanpur will soon offer super-speciality medical degrees, marking a significant expansion in its educational offerings. The institution is currently constructing a hospital situated near the banks of the Ganga, with cranes actively involved in the ongoing developments. As students across various engineering disciplines settle into their routines, these new facilities remain unoccupied, awaiting the arrival of future medical professionals trained in innovative methodologies.

The institution has stated that it will not initially provide the conventional MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) programme, which is typically associated with medical education in India. Instead, it plans to introduce higher medical degrees such as DM (Doctorate of Medicine) and MCh (Master of Chirurgiae), as well as advanced super-speciality training. The MBBS programme is expected to launch in three to four years.

Professor Anil K. Lalwani, a pivotal figure in this initiative, emphasised the unique approach IIT Kanpur is adopting. His background combines expertise in both medicine and engineering, highlighting an innovative pathway for the future of medical training in India. He believes in the importance of constructing a solid foundation for the education system before introducing undergraduate courses like the MBBS.

Planned Medical Curriculum and Degrees

The focus of IIT Kanpur’s new medical programme is on developing specialists before general practitioners. Dean Lalwani explained that the institution aims to prioritise training in advanced medical fields and fostering research that bridges the gap between medicine and engineering. The groundwork for the MBBS degree will be laid only after establishing the infrastructure and faculty needed to support it effectively.

The university plans to build upwards by launching its medical degrees initially, laying the groundwork for an educational model that integrates engineering solutions within medical practices. This unique approach aims to prepare students who are not only skilled in clinical practice but also adept at applying engineering principles in healthcare settings.

The Yadupati Singhania Super-Speciality Hospital, a 500-bed facility, is set to be inaugurated by the end of this year. The hospital is expected to start admitting patients by March 2027. Additionally, a 50-bed Cancer Care and Research Centre is under construction nearby, designed for close collaboration with the medical laboratories, thus promoting interdisciplinary research and rapid problem-solving capabilities.

Expansion and Future Aspirations

IIT Kanpur is looking to expand its faculty by recruiting 60 new members, which marks the most substantial growth initiative in the college’s history. These faculty members will span various clinical and research disciplines, further enhancing the institute’s capabilities in the medical field.

Dean Lalwani has chosen to focus on collective success over individual achievements, consciously avoiding spotlighting his specialty in hearing loss. He believes that the school should be built on collaborative efforts, avoiding the perception that it is merely a platform for showcasing personal expertise. This philosophy aims to foster a culture of teamwork and patient-centred innovation.

India’s other IITs, including IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, are also reportedly exploring the establishment of medical degree programmes. Dean Lalwani predicts that a new category of medical institutions will emerge across India, transforming the educational landscape as the IITs did for engineering. The emphasis on specialists who can integrate technology with healthcare is seen as vital for future advancements in the medical domain.
