IIT Indore Unveils AI Digital Twin Charak DT for Early Disease Detection

The CSR Journal Magazine

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore have developed Charak DT, an AI-powered digital twin of the human body aimed at enabling early disease detection and preventive diagnosis.

Unveiled on 15 January at the Madhya Pradesh Regional AI Impact Conference 2026 in Bhopal, the innovation simulates physiological functions like breathing and blinking to study disease progression across organs.

The platform, named after the ancient Indian medical text Charaka Samhita, creates a virtual replica of patients for medical experiments, such as testing treatments without risking real subjects. Developed by Drishti CPS—a technology innovation hub at IIT Indore funded by the Department of Science and Technology under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS)—Charak DT currently focuses on lung simulations trained on human parameters that trigger diseases.

Vaibhav Jain from Drishti CPS demonstrated the model, which diagnoses conditions when parameters exceed thresholds. “We are making a digital twin of the human body which aims to provide preventive diagnosis,” Jain told ANI. The replica mimics real humans, allowing safe virtual trials of medicines and therapies.

Clinical Trials with AIIMS Centres

Clinical validation begins soon through partnerships with three All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) facilities: AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Delhi, and AIIMS Raipur. These trials will test the platform’s accuracy in real-world diagnostics, marking a step towards broader medical adoption.

Drishti CPS has already supported 89 startups across sectors, with healthcare now prioritised. The hub is evolving into a Technology Translation Research Park dedicated to digital healthcare solutions, accelerating AI applications in medicine.

Expansion to Cardiovascular and Beyond

Future plans include developing digital twins for the cardiovascular system and other organs, expanding beyond lungs. This phased approach will enable comprehensive disease modelling, from respiratory issues to heart conditions.

The unveiling aligns with national AI initiatives. The Madhya Pradesh conference precedes the India AI Impact Summit 2026 (16-20 February, New Delhi), one of eight regional events showcasing AI’s role in healthcare transformation.

IIT Indore’s Charak DT positions India at the forefront of AI-driven medical innovation, potentially reducing diagnostic delays and improving outcomes in resource-constrained settings.
