Organised by the government, the event aimed to demonstrate national solidarity in light of ongoing military pressures from the United States and Israel, which began in February. With the economy under strain due to US sanctions and a naval blockade, the Iranian leadership is pushing for an enhanced citizen military presence.

Participants, reportedly clad in combat attire, marched through central Tehran, waving flags to the cheers of bystanders. This show of support was termed “Janfaday-e Iran,” which translates to “those who sacrifice their lives for Iran.” Calls for volunteers to undergo military training were made during the rally, underlining the necessity of augmenting the country’s defence capabilities.

State media initiated a campaign encouraging citizens to enrol for military drills with the rally acting as a catalyst. Officials expressed their anticipation of over 1 million volunteers joining the military training phase, with estimates of 600,000 individuals already registered as of the event. This initiative seeks to establish an added layer of security alongside Iran’s established Revolutionary Guard and Basij forces.

Government Officials Voice Support for Military Initiative

During the rally, General Hassan Hassanzadeh, the Tehran Guard chief, stated that the turnout surpassed prior expectations, with the figure exceeding 300,000 on the streets. Additional remarks from the newly appointed Basij head, Hossein Taeb, indicated plans for similar rallies in other regions, further expanding the call for civilian defence readiness. Taeb highlighted the potential of the new volunteer trainees to serve as a formidable deterrence against perceived threats to Iran.

Confrontational sentiments were evident among participants, with expressions of hostility directed at the United States and Israel, evident through chants of “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.” Marchers also symbolically trampled on flags of the two nations as part of their protest. A 24-year-old attendee, Marzieh Afaghi, vocalised her defiance to international threats, particularly those from US President Donald Trump, emphasizing a historical resistance to foreign invasions.

The rally also featured a display of military equipment, including anti-aircraft installations and drone technology, which has been deployed prominently in naval engagements within the Strait of Hormuz. Female members of the Revolutionary Guard participated in the display alongside heavy weaponry, reinforcing the message of readiness and military strength.

Reactions to Ongoing Political Climate in Iran

This rally underscores a pivot towards hardline responses within the Iranian political landscape, particularly given the context of prior significant protests that erupted in January over economic challenges. These protests were met with a severe crackdown that reportedly resulted in over 7,000 fatalities and the detention of tens of thousands of demonstrators, emphasising a rising tide of frustration within segments of the Iranian populace.

As of May, government statements indicated that more than 30 million Iranians had volunteered to defend the state, a claim that has yet to be independently verified. The current rally serves not only as a mobilising effort for military readiness but also as a broader symbolic act of unity in the face of external threats and internal dissent.

In the shadow of continued military engagement and economic hardship, Iranian leaders aim to bolster civilian participation in defence initiatives. The current events are likely to shape future responses to domestic and international pressures exerted upon the nation.
