High AQI Alert: Dermatologist Offers Tips to Protect Skin and Hair

The CSR Journal Magazine

The rising pollution levels in Delhi-NCR have significant implications for skin and hair health, as highlighted by Dr Anil KV Minz, a senior dermatologist at Marengo Asia Hospitals and Genesis Skin and Hair Clinic in Faridabad. He notes that tiny particulate matter and various pollutants can settle on the skin, leading to clogged pores and triggering acne flare-ups. Individuals may observe that their skin becomes rougher, duller, and more susceptible to breakouts during high Air Quality Index (AQI) days.

Dr Minz further explains that prolonged exposure to elevated pollution levels can contribute to premature ageing. The free radicals produced by these pollutants accelerate the breakdown of collagen, resulting in increased wrinkles and other visible signs of ageing. Additionally, pollution can weaken the skin barrier, making it more sensitive and prone to irritation. Symptoms such as redness, itching, and burning sensations may arise, particularly during periods of high AQI.

Moreover, exposure to pollutants like particulate matter and ozone can exacerbate oxidative stress and inflammation, potentially worsening existing skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. The dermatologist warns that long-term exposure to certain pollutants may also elevate the risk of skin malignancies.

Recognising Early Signs of Damage

It is crucial to identify early signs of pollution-induced damage to prevent further irritation. Dr Minz lists several skin-related symptoms to watch for, including a tight feeling after washing the face, dullness, rough patches, and increased acne flare-ups. Other indicators include uneven skin tone, dark spots, and heightened sensitivity, which may suggest that the skin barrier has been compromised.

In terms of hair and scalp health, signs of damage may include dry, frizzy hair, scalp irritation, increased hair breakage, and visible thinning. Loss of shine and manageability can also occur as a result of exposure to pollutants. Recognising these symptoms early can help individuals take necessary precautions to mitigate further damage.

Dr Minz emphasises that while pollution is a significant factor, other causes such as over-cleansing, excessive exfoliation, and the use of harsh products can also harm the skin barrier. Therefore, a holistic approach to skincare is essential.

Essential Skincare and Haircare Tips

To safeguard skin and hair during high-AQI days, Dr Minz recommends several precautions. Firstly, limiting outdoor exposure is vital; staying indoors during severe AQI conditions can significantly reduce contact with harmful pollutants. Incorporating antioxidants into one’s diet can also help combat oxidative stress. Consulting a healthcare professional about supplements like vitamins C and E, zinc, or omega-3 fatty acids is advisable.

Staying hydrated is essential, along with using a moisturiser appropriate for one’s skin type. Gentle cleansing is recommended, with a thorough wash at the end of the day to remove dirt and pollutants. Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is crucial for protection against UV damage.

Dr Minz also advises establishing a night-time routine that includes cleansing and applying a ceramide-rich moisturiser to support skin barrier repair. For hair care, using a gentle shampoo after exposure to polluted environments is necessary, along with wearing a clean, breathable hat outdoors. It is also important to avoid irritating products and to use conditioner to reduce hair breakage.

Finally, Dr Minz cautions against common mistakes such as overwashing the face, skipping sunscreen, and using harsh products. He advises seeking professional help if persistent irritation, worsening acne, or excessive hair shedding occurs.
