Haryana Woman Dies After Alleged Dowry Assault by Husband, CCTV Shows Brutal Attack

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 31-year-old woman, Jyoti, died in Haryana’s Kaithal district following an alleged physical assault by her husband, reportedly over a dowry demand of ₹20,000. The incident occurred on 2 February in Pundri town, where she was living with her in-laws. Jyoti’s father has alleged that her husband and in-laws had been pressuring her to bring money from her parental home, citing losses in their clothing business.

According to statements given to the police, Jyoti’s husband allegedly beat her with a wooden plank during a dispute regarding the money, resulting in her death. The matter came to light after a formal complaint was filed with Pundri police, who have since arrested Jyoti’s husband. A case has been registered against five members of her in-laws’ family.

CCTV Footage Surfaces Showing the Assault

An 8-minute-long CCTV video has emerged in connection to the case. The footage reportedly shows Jyoti being assaulted in a closed room by multiple members of her marital family. Distressed cries such as “Haye Mummy” and “Mar gayi” can be heard, indicating a violent confrontation.

Neighbours can be seen gathering outside the room, urging the accused to open the door. Despite repeated banging and pleas from people outside—including women who appear visibly alarmed—the door remained shut for several minutes.

After some time, a young man is seen breaking open the door and entering the room along with others. He brings out Jyoti’s husband, who is holding the wooden plank used in the assault. When bystanders attempt to seize it, he reportedly re-enters the room.

Other Family Members Under Investigation

The video also shows Jyoti’s brother-in-law entering the house carrying a plastic pipe. The sound of further commotion and screams follows shortly after. The deceased woman’s sister-in-law is also seen outside the house initially, but later goes inside and allegedly shuts the door again.

Following these developments, police have taken custody of the accused husband and recovered both the wooden plank and the plastic pipe as part of the evidence. Authorities at the Pundri police station have confirmed that an investigation is underway into the possible involvement of other family members.

Police Await Post-Mortem Report

Investigation Officer Sunil Kumar stated that Jyoti’s post-mortem report is awaited to confirm the exact cause of death. However, initial findings suggest that she succumbed to severe injuries sustained during the assault.

Police are examining the roles of other members of the family listed in the complaint, which includes Jyoti’s mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the ongoing inquiry and post-mortem results.

The case has heightened concerns surrounding dowry-related violence and the safety of married women in Haryana, where similar incidents have been reported in recent times.
