Hailstorm and Rain Impact Bandipora District in Jammu and Kashmir

The CSR Journal Magazine

A hailstorm, accompanied by rain and gusty winds, impacted parts of Bandipora district in Jammu and Kashmir on October 5. This sudden change in weather has raised concerns among local farmers due to the damage inflicted on standing crops. Witnesses reported that the hailstorm lasted approximately ten minutes and affected several areas within the district.

Farmers have indicated significant losses as a result of the adverse weather conditions. The intense hail mixed with rain and strong winds has led to widespread concerns about crop viability, which is critical for the livelihood of the agricultural community in the region.

Weather Alerts Issued by IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) responded to the situation by issuing an alert for thunderstorms. This includes forecasts of light rain and gusty winds ranging from 41 to 61 kilometers per hour. Additional alerts have been extended to neighbouring districts, including Kupwara, Baramulla, Gandrebal, Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, Raesi, and Rajouri.

The IMD is actively monitoring weather conditions across other parts of the Union Territory. A yellow alert has been specifically issued for Bandipora along with other areas of Jammu and Kashmir for October 9 and 10. Forecasts suggest isolated thunderstorms and lightning, alongside gusty winds over the region.

Meteorological predictions indicate that scattered rainfall is expected across Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on October 9, 11, 13, and 14, with further instances of isolated thunderstorms and lightning predicted in the days ahead.

Related Weather Developments in Surrounding Areas

In addition to conditions in Bandipora, parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also likely to experience thunderstorms and gusty winds. The weather patterns leading to heavy rainfall have already been observed in Uttarakhand, where significant amounts of rain were recorded up until 8:30 am on October 5. Areas such as Berinag AWS in Pithoragarh received 78.5 mm of rainfall, while Nainital and Pithoragarh recorded 55 mm and 50.7 mm, respectively.

Earlier reports from Shimla city noted a rapid weather change with rain and dense fog that affected daily life on October 4. This dramatic shift left locals and tourists experiencing a sharp chill, which disrupted routines and caused diminished visibility, prompting many to seek shelter. Horse operators on the Ridge also had to halt their activities due to the adverse conditions.

The prevailing weather scenarios indicate a need for preparedness in the affected regions. Local authorities are urged to assess the damages to crops and infrastructure to effectively address the aftermath of the storms. The IMD continues to issue updates and alerts to keep the community informed about ongoing and upcoming weather changes.
