Gwalior Zoo’s White Tigress Meera Gives Birth to 3 Cubs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gwalior Zoo, located in Madhya Pradesh, has reported the birth of three tiger cubs by a white tigress named ‘Meera’. The cubs were born on the afternoon of April 6, 2025. The litter consists of one white cub and two yellow cubs belonging to the Royal Bengal breed. This addition brings the total number of tigers at the zoo to ten, comprising four white tigers and six Royal Bengal tigers.

The three cubs, along with their mother, underwent a preliminary health check-up, which confirmed that all are in good health. According to Gaurav Parihar, the zoo curator, Meera is actively nursing and caring for her offspring. This positive health status is crucial for the cubs’ subsequent development.”

Zoo’s Role and Animal Exchange Program

The Gwalior Zoo, known formally as Gandhi Zoological Park, plays an essential role in animal conservation, particularly through its Animal Exchange Program. The initiative allows the zoo to exchange animals with other facilities across India, aiding in genetic diversity and conservation efforts. The curator noted that the zoo has successfully provided approximately 21 to 22 tigers and tigresses to various other zoos in the country.

Meera herself has a unique history; she was born at the Gwalior Zoo from a white tigress imported from Delhi. Her continued contributions to the zoo, through the birth of multiple cubs, highlight the facility’s commitment to tiger breeding and conservation. The zoo aims to maintain a balanced ratio of white tigers to Royal Bengal tigers, emphasising the importance of cross-mating to prevent inbreeding issues.

Under the guidelines set forth by the central authority, the zoo ensures that its breeding strategies align with conservation goals. By managing the pairings of tigers, Gwalior Zoo strives to produce resilient populations while maintaining the genetic health of both species involved.”

Meera’s Care Regimen Post-Birth

Following the birth of her cubs, Meera is currently on a carefully monitored diet to support her nursing. The feeding regimen includes light meals such as chicken, chicken soup, eggs, and milk, ensuring that she receives adequate nutrition while caring for her young. This type of diet is essential for maintaining her energy levels and overall health during this critical period.”

The zoo management continues to monitor Meera and the cubs closely, providing the necessary care and attention that both the mother and her offspring require. This attentive approach to animal welfare reflects Gwalior Zoo’s broader commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for its residents.”

Gwalior Zoo remains a key player in regional conservation efforts, ensuring that both the tigers and their habitat are preserved. Meera’s successful birthing of her cubs not only adds to the zoo’s population but also showcases the importance of dedicated wildlife management in zoos around India.”
