A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to death for raping and murdering his six-year-old niece in Durg district, Chhattisgarh. This judgement was handed down by a fast-track special court within 17 months of the incident. The additional sessions judge, Anish Dubey, deemed the case to be among the “rarest of rare” and imposed the death penalty on Somesh Yadav, under the pertinent sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Incident Background

The tragic event occurred in April 2025 when the victim was visiting her grandmother’s home in Om Nagar Urla, participating in the ‘kanya pujan’ ritual, which is customary during Chaitra Navratari. Her absence by evening raised alarm bells among family members, who began searching for her. When she could not be located, they opted to file a missing person report at the Mohan Nagar Police Station.

Tragically, the victim suffered cardiac arrest as a result of the severe trauma inflicted upon her during the assault. Yadav allegedly took drastic measures to conceal his crime by pouring toilet cleaner on the child’s private parts, attempting to destroy any evidence. He then concealed her body in a neighbour’s vehicle, apparently to mislead law enforcement.

Legal Proceedings and Court Verdict

During the trial, the court meticulously examined witness testimonies alongside forensic evidence that led to Yadav’s conviction. The evidence presented painted a grim picture of the events that transpired leading to the girl’s death and indicated a deliberate effort by Yadav to obstruct the investigation.

Ultimately, the legal process resulted in a unanimous decision by the court to impose the most severe sanctions possible, signalling societal condemnation of such heinous acts. The judge’s remarks highlighted the exceptional nature of the crime, underscoring the court’s commitment to sending a strong message regarding the safety and protection of children.
