The Nalanda Library at IIM Jammu is now recognised as Jammu’s first smart library, integrating digital resources with cutting-edge technology to meet contemporary student needs. This state-of-the-art facility employs the KOHA Library Management System alongside Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, which aids in the access, tracking, and overall management of library resources. The intention behind these technological advancements is to create an appealing environment for students, even as reliance on digital learning continues to rise.

Extensive Digital Resources Available

The library offers students access to an impressive array of materials, including over 56 databases, approximately 2.5 lakh e-books, and more than 23,000 e-journals. Notably, around 88 to 90 per cent of its offerings are available in digital format, although physical books are still provided for course-related studies and referencing. Its vast collection includes academic research, company and sectoral information, socio-economic indicators, newspapers, and various research-support resources. The library also participates in the One Nation One Subscription initiative to further enhance access to resources.

Students can utilise a specialised web portal to review resource availability, manage real-time bookings, and secure creative spaces or discussion rooms. Access to digital materials is available 24/7 from various locations across the campus, including hostels, ensuring continuous availability even during training sessions, internships, or competitions.

Designed to accommodate different study environments, the library features a silent zone dedicated to individual assignments, reading, and reference work. Additionally, interactive discussion rooms are tailored for case discussions, placement interviews, online presentations, and collaborative academic projects, particularly for MBA and business students. An integrated 12-terminal Bloomberg Finance Lab is also available, along with Artificial Intelligence technologies woven into the library’s digital framework.

Student Accessibility and Convenience Enhanced

The introduction of a digital system has significantly reduced the time students spend locating books, rooms, and databases. Pushti, a third-year student enrolled in a five-year integrated programme, remarked that she can access numerous resources directly from her hostel room or while travelling home. She appreciated the website, which provides comprehensive information regarding the availability of books and rooms, stating, “All the information is available on the website, so everything is literally at my fingertips.” This system is seen as a time-saver for her and fellow students.

For researchers, particularly PhD scholars, the availability of specialised databases presents a significant advantage. Sheikh Junaid Yaqoob, who is conducting research in economics and the business environment, acknowledged that IIM Jammu grants access to ProQuest and CMI databases, which are often unavailable at many local universities. Some resources remain exclusive to well-established institutions and are not included in the One Nation One Subscription programme.

Marketing PhD scholar Okar Singh highlighted the library’s substantial development since he commenced his studies in 2023, specifically mentioning the MyLOFT application. He referred to it as “the library at your fingertips,” citing its ability to streamline library services through a single app. This transformative approach exemplifies IIM Jammu’s commitment to integrating library services with modern technology while retaining the value of traditional printed materials.
