The wife of a former Navy serviceman was taken into custody on Wednesday, days after her husband died from a stab wound sustained inside their home in Gurugram, police said, terming the incident an accident.
How the Incident Took Place?
Sunil Kumar, 45, a resident of Nakhrola village, had returned home on January 18 after consuming alcohol, police said. As he made his way towards the bathroom, he reportedly stumbled. At that moment, his wife Mamta, 43, who was preparing food and holding a kitchen knife, rushed towards him to prevent a fall. During the attempt to steady him, the knife allegedly pierced his chest.
Kumar collapsed and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Family members initially told authorities that he had suffered a heart attack.
However, the narrative changed after an autopsy was conducted the following day. “A post-mortem examination on Monday revealed that the death was caused due to an injury inflicted by a sharp weapon,” a police spokesperson stated.
Chest Injury Found in Autopsy, Complaint Filed
Sub Inspector Ranjit Singh said doctors informed the police after noticing the injury during the post-mortem. Based on the medical findings, Kumar’s uncle approached the Kherki Daula police station on Tuesday and lodged a complaint.
An FIR was subsequently registered against Mamta under provisions related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder, police said. She was produced before a court on Thursday and remanded to one-day police custody.
Kumar had retired from the Indian Navy around five years ago and was employed with a private company at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife and their two sons. Police said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing.
