Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel delivered the state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 on February 18, outlining a strong focus on economic growth, social welfare, infrastructure, and environmentally sustainable initiatives. The budget was presented in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly by Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai. The total budget amounts to Rs 4.08 lakh crore, representing a 10.2 percent increase compared to the previous year.
Notably, 65 percent of this expenditure is allocated to developmental activities aimed at enhancing sectors such as education, agriculture, health, urban infrastructure, and social services.
Investments in Employment and Skill Development
Under the ‘Namo Gujarat Kaushalya and Rojgar Mission’, significant provisions have been set aside to bolster skill development and create employment opportunities for the youth. The budget also emphasizes the continued investment in health and social services, reflecting the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
Green Initiatives and Tourism Promotion
Highlighting a commitment to green growth, the budget allocates over Rs 15,000 crore for various environmental initiatives. The year 2026 has been designated as ‘Gujarat Tourism Year’, with Rs 6,500 crore specifically reserved to boost the tourism industry, positioning Gujarat on the international tourism stage.
Focus on Tribal Development
Development in tribal areas has been prioritized, with more than Rs 35,000 crore allocated for mainstreaming tribal regions. This includes investments in lift irrigation schemes, industrial development centers, and employment opportunities aimed at tribal youth, alongside plans to establish five new Gujarat Industrial Development Corporations (GIDCs) in these regions.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Investments
The budget outlines substantial investments in infrastructure and connectivity. Key projects include the Gujarat High-Speed Corridor, climate-resilient roadways, and advancements in AI and digital governance. A Data Fusion Center and a Center of Excellence are also planned as part of this initiative.
Sports and Regional Economic Development
A total of Rs 1,200 crore has been allocated for upgrading sports facilities in Ahmedabad to meet Olympic standards and enhance transport services. Furthermore, the government has pledged nearly Rs 7,000 crore towards six Regional Economic Master Plans, reinforcing the long-term vision for a developed Gujarat by 2047.
Government’s Commitment to Inclusive Growth
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attributed the state’s ongoing progress to the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing that Gujarat continues to lead in development while ensuring the implementation of welfare programs without imposing additional taxes. Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai and his team were acknowledged for presenting a budget that embodies the state’s commitment to dynamic and sustainable growth.
