Government Promotes Piped Natural Gas Adoption for Households

The CSR Journal Magazine

In light of ongoing tensions in West Asia, the Indian government is implementing measures to maintain energy security domestically. A key initiative is encouraging households to transition from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to piped natural gas (PNG). Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing and Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated that companies are providing incentives including free gas support of up to Rs 500 and eliminating security deposit fees for new connections. This initiative is designed to streamline energy supply and reduce dependency on imported LPG.

Incentives for Households and Streamlined Processes

Sharma noted that consumers in areas where PNG connections are available will be notified via registered post, and those using LPG will receive a three-month grace period to make the switch to PNG. She emphasized that the shift is logical due to the significant import dependency associated with LPG compared to PNG. Reports indicate that approximately 220,000 consumers have already transitioned to PNG. To facilitate this shift, the Delhi government has removed road restoration charges and allowed for continuous pipeline installations.

Recent Developments in PNG Connections

To expedite the rollout of PNG connections, the Delhi government has authorized 24/7 operational hours for related projects. According to Sharma, in just the last 25 days, around 250,000 new PNG connections have been established, highlighting the momentum of this initiative.

Government Reassures Public on LPG Availability

While promoting PNG, the government also reassured the public about the stability of LPG supplies. Sujata Sharma confirmed that there is no shortage, urging consumers not to believe circulating rumors. “There is no dryness in the domestic LPG supply,” she asserted. To combat illegal activities, the government has been proactive; on a recent day, nearly 2,700 enforcement actions were conducted nationwide, resulting in the seizure of approximately 2,000 cylinders.

High Demand for LPG and Online Booking Trends

The demand for LPG remains robust, with a significant percentage of consumers opting to book refills online. Sharma observed that about 92% of refill bookings are made through online channels, indicating a shift in consumer behavior. The government has also distributed commercial LPG across various states to ensure a steady supply, with around 22,000 tons allocated to 26 states thus far. Additionally, approximately 30,000 small 5-kg cylinders were distributed recently.

Alternative Fuel Options and Ongoing Global Dialogues

In efforts to provide alternative energy solutions, the government has increased kerosene allocations in several states and union territories. On the international front, dialogues continue regarding the evolving situation in West Asia. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with US President Donald Trump to address regional developments. Additionally, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with the Iranian Ambassador to discuss the current state of affairs.

Focus on Energy Security and Domestic Supply

The primary focus for the government remains on ensuring the continued supply of energy while minimizing reliance on imports. This approach aims to provide households with access to reliable and affordable energy alternatives, supporting both consumer needs and national energy security initiatives.
