The Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP V Sivadasan has raised concerns regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party’s financial trajectory, stating that while their funds are reportedly increasing, expenditure on education is diminishing. This assertion was made in light of a recent incident involving the collapse of a building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, which resulted in the deaths of seven individuals.

Sivadasan emphasised the pressing need for proper hostel facilities for the thousands of students reliant on paying guest accommodations in the capital. He expressed frustration over the government’s apparent reluctance to convert existing buildings into hostels, asserting that the situation calls for urgent intervention from authorities.

Thousands of students in Delhi depend on PG hostels. The government is not ready to make the buildings for students into a hostel,” Sivadasan stated, underscoring the disparity between the government’s financial priorities and the needs of the education sector.

Allegations of Neglect in Higher Education

Sivadasan went further to accuse the government of neglecting higher education institutions, specifically pointing out the shortage of faculty. He alleged that there has been a failure to appoint teachers at universities and colleges, which is detrimental to the educational environment. His comments reflect a broader concern regarding insufficient investment in the education sector amid rising administrative funds.

The MP asserted that the current funding model is inadequate and that urgent steps need to be taken to bolster investment in education. According to him, a robust educational framework is essential for the country’s future, and neglecting this foundational area can lead to adverse long-term consequences.

In the context of this collapse and ongoing issues in the educational sector, it is clear that regulations had been violated in areas like Satya Niketan,” he added, implying that oversight failures had contributed to the tragedy.

Calls for Investigation into Illegal PG Accommodations

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has responded to the situation by seeking an investigation into alleged illegal paying guest accommodations operating in Satya Niketan. This was prompted by claims made during a press conference by Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha, who indicated that a woman’s video had emerged, alleging the illegal operations were being conducted under the protection of BJP MLA Anil Sharma.

An illegal PG business in the area is allegedly run under the protection of MLA Anil Sharma,” Jha revealed at the AAP headquarters. This has raised significant concerns about regulatory compliance and accountability among local authorities in managing such accommodations.

Municipal Corporation Takes Action Against Illegal Constructions

In line with the directive from Chief Minister Gupta, inspections of PGs and hostels throughout Delhi are poised to intensify,” a statement from the Delhi government noted. Responsibilities have been assigned to examine building records to determine the authenticity of the constructions and their compliance with existing regulations.
