iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max Launched In India With A20 Pro Chip And Variable Aperture Camera

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, introducing its latest flagship smartphones with a new 2-nanometre A20 Pro chip, upgraded AI capabilities, longer battery life and what the company describes as one of its biggest camera upgrades in years.

The iPhone 18 Pro will start at Rs 1,64,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be priced from Rs 1,79,900 for the 256GB variants. Pre-orders for both models will begin on September 12, with general availability starting on September 18.

Four New Finishes And Redesigned Dynamic Island

Apple said the iPhone 18 Pro series features a redesigned construction combining colour-matched aluminium and back glass.

The new Pro models will be available in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

The Dynamic Island on the front has also been redesigned and made smaller. Apple said the updated interface can now display up to three Live Activities simultaneously.

A20 Pro Brings Major Performance Upgrade

Powering the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is Apple’s A20 Pro processor, built using 2-nanometre technology.

The chipset features a six-core CPU comprising two desktop-class supercores, which Apple claims are up to 20% faster, along with four efficiency cores.

The A20 Pro also includes a seven-core GPU, with Apple claiming a 40% improvement in graphics performance over the previous generation.

The 32-core Neural Engine offers twice the computing power for running third-party large language models entirely on the device, according to the company.

New Thermal System For Sustained Performance

Apple has also redesigned the internal thermal architecture of the iPhone 18 Pro series to support the more powerful processor.

The new system includes a next-generation vapour chamber with three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro’s system.

Apple said the chamber uses cycling deionised water, 80% recycled stainless steel and what it described as an industry-first nanotwin copper material.

According to Apple, the redesigned thermal system can deliver up to a 40% improvement in sustained performance compared with the iPhone 17 Pro.

Battery Life And Charging Get A Boost

Apple has claimed significant improvements in battery performance, aided by the efficiency of the A20 Pro chip and redesigned batteries.

The iPhone 18 Pro is rated to deliver up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM models and up to 24 hours of mixed real-world usage on a single charge.

The larger iPhone 18 Pro Max is claimed to offer up to 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of mixed usage.

Wired charging has also been upgraded, with Apple claiming that the new models can reach 50% charge in 15 minutes.

Variable Aperture Marks Major Camera Upgrade

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max feature a new 48-megapixel Fusion main camera with a mechanical variable aperture.

Apple said the camera uses six laser-cut polymer composite blades, thinner than a human hair, allowing the aperture to physically adjust according to shooting conditions.

In low-light conditions, the aperture can open to allow 50% more light, with the system optimised at f/1.8. It can also narrow to increase depth of field, which Apple said can help produce sharper group photographs.

The new camera system also introduces Pro Controls, allowing users to manually adjust white balance, view histograms, alter shutter speed for intentional motion blur and choose from four manual aperture settings.

Apple Introduces Reference Image Feature

Apple has also introduced a new feature called Apple Reference Image, aimed at verifying the authenticity of photographs in an increasingly AI-driven digital environment.

The company said the feature goes beyond the supported Synth ID standard by securely signing photo data at the pixel level through the sensor at the time an image is captured.

Apple described the resulting data as an unalterable “digital negative” designed to verify what was present in front of the camera when the photograph was taken.

Prices, Storage Options And Availability

The iPhone 18 Pro will start at Rs 1,64,900, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available from Rs 1,79,900.

Both models will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage configurations.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro series will begin on September 12, with sales and general availability starting on September 18.
