Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that Iran was close to defeat as fighting across West Asia intensified, while asserting that Israel still had work to do to bring down what he described as the country’s “terror regime”.

Speaking during a visit to Israeli troops on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, Netanyahu said Israel was close to achieving its objective and predicted the eventual collapse of the wider Iran-led axis. Netanyahu Says ‘There Is Still Work To Be Done’

“There is still work to be done — the main task is to bring down the terror regime in Iran. We are very close to that. We know that the entire axis will ultimately collapse,” Netanyahu said during his visit to Israeli troops in southern Syria, AFP reported.

Netanyahu’s remarks underscored his government’s stated objective of defeating Iran’s leadership as the conflict continues to widen across the region.

Israeli Forces Maintain Presence In Southern Syria

Israeli forces have maintained a presence in what Israel describes as a security zone in southern Syria since the fall of longtime Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad in December 2024.

Israeli troops entered the United Nations-patrolled buffer zone following the collapse of Assad’s government, with Israel describing the move as a temporary measure necessary to secure its border during Syria’s political transition. (Reuters)

The area had previously served as a buffer between Israeli and Syrian forces in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights under arrangements dating back to 1974.

Mount Hermon Remains A Key Strategic Position

Mount Hermon has remained strategically important because of its location overlooking the border region.

Netanyahu has previously said Israeli forces would remain in the area until a security arrangement capable of safeguarding Israel’s interests was reached. (TRT World)
