The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised construction, illegal property use and structurally unsafe buildings, carrying out more than 1,000 demolitions and sealing nearly 500 properties across the capital since June 1.

The city-wide enforcement drive across all 12 MCD zones has gained momentum amid heightened scrutiny of unsafe and illegal structures following the recent building collapse in south Delhi’s Satya Niketan, in which at least seven people were killed.

Over 1,000 Demolitions Since June

According to official division records released by the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office, the MCD carried out 1,053 demolitions between June 1 and September 9, 2026.

During the same period, the civic body sealed 491 properties, issued 2,316 show-cause notices and served 757 demolition notices as part of its enforcement action against unauthorised construction and violations of civic regulations.

On September 9 alone, MCD teams carried out 34 demolition actions and 17 sealing operations across different zones of the city.

The Narela zone accounted for six large-scale demolition drives, while the South Zone saw action against a five-storey unauthorised building. Five demolitions were reported from the Central Zone.

Action Taken Across Multiple Delhi Zones

Three demolitions each were carried out in the Keshavpuram and Shahdara (North) zones as the MCD continued its action against unauthorised structures.

In the West Zone, officials took action against a dangerous property in Deep Enclave, Part-II, Vikas Nagar.

Four properties in Prem Nagar and Kala Mahal near Jama Masjid were demolished in the City-SP Zone over unauthorised construction, according to the official records.

The Civil Lines Zone also witnessed a major demolition drive in Sant Nagar A-1 Block Extension.

Properties Sealed Over Misuse

On the sealing front, the Civil Lines Zone took action against four properties for alleged misuse, including Vardhman Mall.

The MCD’s wider drive is aimed at addressing not only unauthorised construction but also violations involving the use of properties and buildings considered vulnerable to structural failure.

Civic authorities have been examining buildings across Delhi that are considered at risk of collapse and have initiated action against structures found to be unsafe or in violation of prescribed construction norms.

Over 1,200 PG Buildings Surveyed

As part of the intensified inspection drive, the MCD surveyed 1,252 Paying Guest, or PG, buildings across the city.

The survey found that 39 buildings required minor repairs, while nine required major repairs. Three structures were classified as dangerous, and one of them has already been demolished.

The inspections were intensified following the Satya Niketan building collapse in south Delhi, which killed at least seven people and prompted the Delhi government and civic authorities to step up scrutiny of buildings that may be structurally unsafe.

Rekha Gupta Orders Intensified Inspections

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed the MCD to undertake a city-wide crackdown on illegal constructions and carry out intensive inspections of PG accommodations.

Particular attention is being given to PG buildings suspected of violating prescribed construction and height norms.

Senior civic officials have also been directed to remain on the ground during enforcement operations as the authorities continue action across Delhi’s 12 zones.

The ongoing drive is intended to reduce risks to residents from unauthorised construction, misuse of properties and structurally unsafe buildings while ensuring compliance with building and civic regulations across the national capital.
