Government Directs WhatsApp to Block Device IDs Linked to Digital Arrest Scams

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has issued an order to WhatsApp to block specific device IDs associated with the ongoing digital arrest scams, as part of a broader initiative to address cyber fraud more effectively. According to sources, this directive follows a report by the Ministry of Home Affairs’ cyber wing, known as I4C, which detailed the rising threat posed by these scams. The decision reflects a commitment to combat these criminal activities with heightened measures.

Measures to Enhance User Safety and Data Retention

Scammers frequently create new accounts to circumvent existing restrictions, leading authorities to consider enforcing device-level bans to prevent repeat offences. In conjunction with these actions, government officials are exploring the implementation of enhanced safety features on platforms such as WhatsApp. These features aim to protect users and deter fraudulent activities more effectively.

Another key focus is on the retention of data from deleted accounts. The government is advocating for a policy that would require platforms to retain this information for up to 180 days, as stipulated under the Information Technology Rules 2021. Officials believe that maintaining this data will assist investigative agencies in accessing vital information during criminal investigations.

Efforts to Identify Malicious Applications

A comprehensive plan is also in the works to identify and block malicious APK files and counterfeit applications associated with these scams. The aim is to create a more robust digital environment that minimizes the risks posed to consumers and enhances the overall safety of online interactions.

Understanding Digital Arrest Scams

Digital arrest scams involve fraudsters masquerading as police or law enforcement officials to coerce individuals into transferring money. These criminals employ platforms like WhatsApp to conduct video calls, creating the illusion of a “digital arrest” to intimidate their targets effectively. The recent governmental measures are designed to mitigate these illicit practices and bolster user protection in digital communication spaces.
