From Kota to Bikaner to Jodhpur: Why Are Women Falling Ill After C-Sections in Rajasthan

The CSR Journal Magazine

After Kota and Bikaner, fresh cases of complications after caesarean deliveries have emerged in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. At least eight women have fallen ill, immediately after undergoing C-sections at the District Government Hospital in Paota tehsil of Jodhpur on June 20.

Reports suggest that the eight women started showing symptoms such as excessive bleeding, low blood pressure post-surgery. Amongst the eight women, two are serious and are shifted to higher medical facilities.

How is the condition of two patients?

One of the patients Lalita, is a resident of Mathania, she is currently undergoing treatment at AIIMS Jodhpur. Her reports suggest that she is diabetic and her blood sugar is continuously dropping. The other patient is Sonu, she is from Daijar, and is being treated at Mathura Das Mathur (MDM) Hospital.

Immediately after the incident came into public domain, authorities suspended the surgeons and the OT of the hospital was shut temporarily. OT samples have been collected and sent for lab tests. Principal of the District Hospital Dr B.S. Jodha said, “On June 20 eight caesarean deliveries were done at the hospital, out of the eight, two are seriously ill and they have been referred for better advanced treatment. The Remaining six patients are being treated at the hospital and are recovering, he noted. Samples have been collected from the operation theatre and sent for examination,”.

Inquiry into the matter commenced

An inquiry committee has been formed by the state government, it comprises doctors, drug inspectors and other officials. All medicines used in the surgeries have been sent for testing and also withdrawn from circulation. This is the third such case of complication after C-section deliveries.

Just two weeks before this incident, a similar incident happened at the PBM Hospital in Bikaner, where six women who underwent C-sections surgeries developed kidney failure, out of them two died after staying on ventilator for at least two weeks. One of the patients identified as Sharda Nayak and another Preeti Nayak.

C-Section kidney failure cases in Kota

It all started in the month of May in Kota, five women died after undergoing caesarean deliveries at New Medical Government Hospital. And five are still under dialysis after suffering kidney failure. Doctors have confirmed that the women are unable to pass urine and are thus undergoing treatment. After this shocking incident, a team of investigators from SMS Hospital Jaipur, AIIMS Delhi and Kota Medical College went to Kota, however the report of the investigation is yet not public.

Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh Khimsar said that the incidents in Kota, Bikaner and now Jodhpur aren’t related. He noted that the situation is being monitored and soon information will be provided. However, inside sources suggest that the cause of the incident can be substandard oxytocin, which is a critical drug used in obstetric care to help the uterus contract after childbirth and prevent severe postpartum bleeding.
