While West Bengal undergoes the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Election Commission of India has issued a warning alerting about fraudsters seeking to dupe people by asking for one-time password (OTP) using the name of SIR.
A warning has been issued signed by the Additional Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, which states that no OTP is requested for SIR from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office or the National Election Commission. Not only that, no OTP is requested for correction of the voter list. The state’s Chief Electoral Officer’s office has issued a press release citing the same.
Lately, there have been complaints that OTPs are being sent to many people in the name of the Election Commission claiming that the OTP is necessary for the SIR process. Many people have complained to the commission that they were fooled by fraudsters and ended up divulging the OTP number. According to the police, a gang is doing this to earn money through dishonest means.
The Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has warned, “For the knowledge of all concerned, it is being informed that no OTP is being requested from the Election Commission of India or the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal. No OTP will be asked for on any mobile number for any work related to Special Intensive Revision (SIR) or voter list revision.”

Recently, the National Election Commissioner held a meeting on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) with the Chief Electoral Officers of 12 states. The National Election Commissioner has sought a detailed report from the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, on how the SIR process is going in the state. The National Election Commissioner has expressed satisfaction with the SIR process in the state so far, according to the commission sources. The work of distributing SIR forms from door to door is almost complete. The National Election Commissioner has also reportedly directed to complete the uploading of forms quickly.
