Former Maldives Defence Minister Emphasises Strategic Position and Calls for Collaboration with India

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mariya Didi, the former Defence Minister of the Maldives, underscored the nation’s critical strategic position on vital maritime routes, especially in light of the ongoing geopolitical turmoil in West Asia. The conflict, which escalated on February 28, 2026, has now entered its second week, with escalating military engagements involving the United States and Israel against Iranian targets.

Need to Move Beyond Superficial Foreign Policy

In a discussion with media representatives, Didi urged South Asian countries to unite in dialogue, advocating for collaboration with allies such as India to enhance regional security. She criticized an insular approach to foreign policy, suggesting that nations should work together to present a unified front. “Times are challenging for all of us. The Maldives is situated at crucial maritime crossroads. It is essential to move beyond superficial foreign policy slogans and engage meaningfully with allies like India and other regional stakeholders,” she noted.

The ongoing military operations have seen a significant uptick in hostilities, with targeted assaults on Iranian military infrastructure and naval assets. Reports indicate that the United States has successfully diminished Iran’s missile capabilities and damaged several naval vessels, with the aim of ensuring the operational continuity of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint for global oil shipping.

The ramifications of the conflict have extended beyond Iran, affecting countries in Lebanon, Iraq, and various Gulf nations—resulting in considerable infrastructure damage and civilian casualties. Didi expressed concern for all parties involved, wishing for a swift resolution to the violence unfolding in the Middle East.

The situation continues to be precarious, compounded by statements from key figures in the US government. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently remarked that the current hostilities represent merely the initial stage of a larger confrontation, a sentiment echoed by US President Donald Trump. Trump asserted that the conflict with Iran would soon reach a conclusion, while noting the severe degradation of Iran’s military capabilities.

Commenting on the recent developments, Hegseth stated, “The Iranian Navy is effectively non-existent at this point. We expect additional naval assets to be targeted, further reducing their ability to project power.” His remarks drew attention to ongoing US operations aimed at neutralizing Iranian threats in the region.

Conversely, Trump stressed that the US military objectives would persist until fulfillment, dismissing Iran’s recent leadership transition following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Mojtaba Khamenei has been appointed as his successor, but this change has not altered the US stance regarding its campaign against Iranian interests.

Didi’s call for collaboration among South Asian nations underscores a broader desire for stability in a region increasingly affected by external conflicts. Her emphasis on unity reflects a growing recognition of the interconnectedness of national security in the context of geopolitical challenges.
