First Batch of 2,000 ‘Prahar’ Light Machine Guns Delivered to Indian Army

The CSR Journal Magazine

Adani Defence & Aerospace delivered the first batch of 2,000 ‘Prahar’ light machine guns (LMGs) to the Indian Army in Gwalior, achieving an important milestone well ahead of schedule. This delivery is part of a larger order for approximately 40,000 units under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, aimed at enhancing the Army’s firepower along sensitive areas such as the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC). The handover took place at the company’s small arms manufacturing facility located on the outskirts of Gwalior.

Official Flag-Off Ceremony Celebrates Early Delivery

The flag-off event was officiated by A Anbarasu, the Director General (Acquisition) at the Ministry of Defence. He praised the project’s timely execution, noting that the company had managed to send out the first shipment nearly 11 months earlier than planned. Anbarasu remarked on the long journey leading to this milestone, which began six years ago with the initial bid submission. “We have successfully delivered the first batch against the backdrop of significant timelines,” he stated during the ceremony.

Specifications of the Prahar Light Machine Gun

The Prahar LMG is a sophisticated 7.62 mm-caliber weapon designed for operational efficiency in high tension areas. It boasts an effective range of up to 1,000 meters and weighs 8 kg with a barrel length of 508 mm. Over 90% of its components are sourced from within India, showcasing the initiative’s focus on indigenous manufacturing abilities. The LMG is crafted for high-performance use in critical deployment zones, aiming to bolster operational capabilities for armed forces.

Plans for Increased Production Capacity

Adani Defence has plans to scale up its production capacity significantly, aiming to manufacture around 1,000 LMGs monthly starting in April 2026. The goal is to complete the order within a three-year period, significantly shorter than the original timeline of seven years. Ashish Rajvanshi, the CEO of Adani Defence, emphasized that this project represents more than a contract, highlighting the company’s evolution into a full-scale Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of small arms.

Facility Highlights and Manufacturing Capabilities

The Gwalior facility, spanning 100 acres, is equipped with advanced CNC machining and robotics, as well as upgraded metallurgy and testing systems. Its annual capacity is projected to reach 100,000 firearms and 300 million rounds of small-caliber ammunition. This infrastructure is poised to play a pivotal role in the broader context of India’s defence manufacturing landscape and self-reliance goals.

Future Endeavors in Indigenous Small Arms Production

Beyond the Prahar project, Adani Defence aims to establish an extensive ecosystem for small arms manufacturing in India. Future production endeavors will focus on developing a range of weaponry, including assault rifles, sniper systems, carbines, pistols, and close-quarter battle (CQB) weapons. Positioned strategically, the Gwalior plant is expected to cater to both domestic and international markets while supporting the government’s commitment to an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ or self-reliant India.
