Jio Platforms Plans India’s Largest IPO, Valuation at ₹10.3 Lakh Crore

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jio Platforms, the digital and telecom subsidiary of Reliance Industries, is gearing up for what is anticipated to be India’s largest initial public offering (IPO). This event is poised to significantly impact the country’s equity markets and alter investor perceptions of the telecom sector. Recent reports indicate that the company may now aim for a valuation of approximately ₹10.3 lakh crore ($106 billion), down from earlier expectations of ₹11 lakh crore ($114 billion).

The IPO is expected to target a share price range of ₹1,065 to ₹1,119, with the potential to raise around ₹30,200 crore if priced at the upper limit. This offering would surpass the previous record held by Hyundai Motor India, which raised ₹27,859 crore in 2024.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the IPO is scheduled to open for public subscription from October 21 to October 23, with shares likely to be listed on October 28. The anchor investor book is set to open on October 19, marking a significant timeline for the offering.

Market Context and Valuation Changes

The adjustment in Jio’s targeted valuation reflects a broader correction in Indian equity markets and shifting investor appetite for large-scale offerings. Reports suggest that the expected valuation has decreased from the $131 billion figure initially anticipated when the company submitted its draft IPO documents in June. As of now, Reliance Industries has not publicly commented on this change.

Jio Platforms encompasses a wide array of services, including mobile connectivity, fixed broadband, cloud services, entertainment, enterprise technology, and artificial intelligence. With 524.4 million telecom subscribers recorded as of March, it stands as one of the largest telecom operators in India. This extensive reach in digital services makes the upcoming listing a focal point for investors looking to tap into India’s growing digital economy.

A successful IPO could position Jio Platforms among the top four listed companies in India by market capitalisation, behind its parent company Reliance Industries, as well as Bharti Airtel and HDFC Bank. This potential ranking underscores the significance of the IPO within the context of the Indian financial landscape.

Potential Impacts on Reliance Industries and the Telecom Sector

The IPO is expected to unlock value for Reliance Industries by providing investors with a direct avenue to invest in Jio Platforms, rather than solely through the parent company. Financial analysts at Motilal Oswal Financial Services have identified the listing as a crucial factor for value realisation at Reliance Industries, which could also influence valuations across the broader telecom sector.

Jio’s valuation is likely to affect how investors evaluate competing telecom firms, particularly Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. The overall outlook for the sector will depend on various factors, including subscriber monetisation, tariff adjustments, and operators’ capacity to maintain revenue growth. Consequently, the IPO’s implications may extend beyond Reliance Industries, with market participants keenly observing how Jio’s pricing compares to its listed peers.

In terms of financial strategy, Jio Platforms plans to allocate up to ₹27,500 crore of the net proceeds from the IPO for the repayment or prepayment of borrowings associated with its telecom subsidiary, Reliance Jio Infocomm. This debt repayment is a pivotal aspect of the offering, aimed at alleviating the subsidiary’s financial burden. The IPO will primarily consist of a fresh issue of shares, rather than an offer for sale by existing shareholders.

For the financial year ending in March, Jio Platforms reported operational revenue of ₹1.47 lakh crore, marking a 14.6 per cent increase from the previous year. The company also saw a profit rise of 15.1 per cent, reaching ₹30,050 crore, highlighting its robust performance prior to the IPO.
