The CSR Journal Magazine

Shubman Gill has been awarded the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for September 2026, marking his fifth title in this category. Gill’s exceptional performances against the West Indies in One Day Internationals (ODIs) were key to his recognition. His latest achievement ties him with Hayley Matthews, the captain of the West Indies, for the most monthly accolades in this category.

Previously, Gill secured the award in January and September 2023, as well as February and July 2025. His consistent form has proven vital to the Indian men’s cricket team’s success over these months, highlighting his importance within the squad.

In his standout performances, Gill scored 110 runs in the first ODI on 12 September 2026 and followed that with a remarkable double-century of 223 off 133 balls. This innings played a pivotal role in India successfully chasing a target of 406, securing victory with eight wickets and 39 balls remaining.

Gill expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, “It feels fantastic to win my fifth ICC Player of the Month award, and I am grateful to the panel for this honour.” He also discussed the evolving landscape of ODI cricket, emphasising the need for quick assessment of pitch conditions during a game.

Shafali Verma Recognised for Impressive Performances

Shafali Verma has also been awarded the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for her remarkable contributions during September. This accolade marks her second Player of the Month award, showcasing her growing influence in women’s cricket. She first received this honour in November 2025, after her significant role in India’s Women’s World Cup victory, particularly her impactful performance in the final against South Africa.

In September, Verma demonstrated versatility by scoring a total of 360 runs across seven T20 Internationals, averaging 72 with a strike rate of 184.61. Moreover, she took six wickets at an average of 13 and maintained an economy rate of 4.33, underscoring her effectiveness with both bat and ball.

During the Women’s Asia Cup held in the UAE, Shafali emerged as the leading run-scorer with 236 runs in five innings. She achieved scores of 64 in the semi-final against Bangladesh and 68 in the final against Sri Lanka, contributing to India’s eighth championship title at the tournament.

Shafali continued her strong performance at the Asian Games in Nagoya, amassing 188 runs from three innings, including an unbeaten hundred against Bangladesh in the semi-finals. She also contributed to the gold medal match with a score of 48 against Sri Lanka. Overall, her efforts led to a significant number of wickets at both tournaments.

India Continues to Dominate Monthly Awards

The recent victories for Gill and Verma emphasize India’s continued prowess in international cricket, having secured both the men’s and women’s Player of the Month awards on multiple occasions. Previous instances include Jasprit Bumrah and Smriti Mandhana winning their respective honours in June 2024, and Abhishek Sharma alongside Mandhana in September 2025.

The achievements of both athletes not only reflect their individual skills but also highlight India’s ongoing strength in the cricketing arena. Their performances have considerably contributed to the national team’s triumphs in recent high-profile competitions.

As India prepares for future matches, the recognition received by these players serves as a source of inspiration for their teammates and upcoming talents. Both Gill and Shafali are anticipated to continue as key players in their respective teams as they aspire towards new milestones in their cricketing careers.
