Sikh Chef’s Appeal for Support Amid Threats and Business Struggles

The CSR Journal Magazine

A Sikh restaurateur in London, Harman Singh Kapoor, has made a public appeal for assistance in keeping his restaurant, Singh’s Dining, operational. Kapoor has alleged that Google is accepting fraudulent one-star reviews while rejecting authentic five-star ratings, which he claims is adversely affecting his business. In a post on social media dated October 12, Kapoor expressed his desperation, stating that he is “swallowing his pride” to seek help from the community. He emphasised that running a restaurant is more than just a business; it is his passion and livelihood.

Kapoor’s concerns about the review system highlight a growing frustration among business owners regarding online reputation management. He specifically mentioned that while negative reviews are being published, positive feedback from satisfied customers is not being accepted. His claims have not been independently verified, and he did not provide any evidence to support his assertions regarding Google’s review policies.

The restaurateur’s situation has become increasingly precarious, with outstanding rent and threats of court action from his landlord adding to his financial burdens. Kapoor’s plea for bookings and support from patrons reflects the dire state of his establishment.

Background of Controversy and Previous Closure

Prior to Singh’s Dining, Kapoor operated Rangrez, an Indian restaurant located on Fulham Palace Road in Hammersmith, London, for approximately 16 years. In February, he announced plans to close Rangrez, citing a combination of rising operational costs, online harassment, and inadequate police support as contributing factors. The restaurant’s refusal to serve halal meat had sparked significant controversy, particularly after Kapoor publicly advertised its non-halal status.

Kapoor has linked his non-halal policy to his Sikh faith, stating that he prefers jhatka meat, which is considered acceptable by some within his community. His outspoken stance on this issue has drawn both support and criticism, particularly when he made inflammatory remarks regarding Muslims and called for a ban on halal slaughter in the UK. These comments have led to heightened tensions and confrontations.

In March, Kapoor organised a “Non-Halal meetup,” encouraging supporters to document any disturbances during the event. This gathering resulted in a confrontation with law enforcement, leading to Kapoor’s detention. He later claimed that his arrest was unlawful and announced intentions to pursue legal action against the Metropolitan Police and London Mayor Sadiq Khan for perceived discrimination.

Current Situation and Future Prospects

As Kapoor continues to navigate the challenges facing Singh’s Dining, he has reiterated his commitment to serving the community as a non-halal restaurant. He has urged customers to make reservations, visit the establishment, and share his message widely. His appeal highlights the importance of community support, stating that each booking and share significantly impacts the restaurant’s survival.

As of October 13, Singh’s Dining has a rating of 2.8 stars out of 5 based on 20 reviews, with the most recent feedback posted three weeks prior. A review of the responses from the restaurant management reveals that they have often been curt and personal in their replies, rather than addressing customer feedback constructively.

Kapoor’s latest appeal underscores the urgent need for support as he strives to keep his business afloat amidst ongoing financial pressures and community scrutiny. He concluded his message by emphasising the critical nature of community backing, stating, “We need you now more than ever. Please book. Please share. Please help us survive.”
