Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India Squad for New Zealand T20I Series

The CSR Journal Magazine

Veteran pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been included in the Indian squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which is set to commence on October 22. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member team that features Kumar, marking his return to international cricket after a hiatus since November 2022. His inclusion comes as a significant boost to the squad, which is largely unchanged and will be captained by Shreyas Iyer.

Kumar’s ability to generate swing is expected to be advantageous in the conditions typically found in New Zealand. His selection ends a prolonged wait for the right-arm pacer, who has maintained a strong following among Indian cricket fans despite his absence from the national team. The pacer’s experience and skill set are anticipated to play a crucial role in the series.

R Ashwin Praises Bhuvneshwar’s Journey

In a recent discussion, renowned spinner R Ashwin expressed admiration for Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s journey back to the national team. Ashwin noted that Kumar likely did not actively seek a return but instead focused on his performance with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He stated, “I don’t think Bhuvneshwar Kumar even thought about or planned for a comeback. His success mantra is that he has gone on his own journey.”

Ashwin highlighted that Kumar’s focus on his immediate responsibilities rather than the outcome has led to his successful return. He remarked, “The reward he has got now with his return to the side is the fruit of his success. But he never went searching for the fruit. He just did his job, and now he has got the success.” This perspective underscores the importance of dedication and commitment in professional sports.

Moreover, Ashwin’s comments reflect the broader sentiment within the cricketing community regarding Kumar’s talent and resilience. His return is seen as a testament to his hard work and determination, qualities that have endeared him to fans and teammates alike.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Potential Recognised

In addition to discussing Bhuvneshwar Kumar, R Ashwin also acknowledged the promising talent of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Ashwin described Sooryavanshi as a prodigy with natural gifts and a deep understanding of the game. He emphasised the importance of enjoying the journey while waiting for opportunities, particularly as Sooryavanshi currently finds himself on the sidelines.

As India continues to field Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as their opening pair in T20Is, Sooryavanshi remains eager for his chance. Ashwin encouraged the young player to remain patient and enjoy the process, stating, “We know Vaibhav will have a great career. But until then, he should enjoy himself as Sanju and Abhishek open.”

Ashwin also reflected on Samson’s journey, noting that he has faced challenges in securing consistent opportunities. “Sanju has had to wait a long time to get chances consistently. He was hardly getting any opportunities. However, when it rains, it pours,” Ashwin remarked, alluding to the sudden influx of chances that players can experience during pivotal moments in their careers.
