Fiat Launches Multiplay Concept Vehicle with Adaptable Design

The CSR Journal Magazine

Fiat has introduced the Multiplay concept, a transformative vehicle that can adapt its form to serve as an SUV, MPV, or pick-up truck. This vehicle measures 4.45 metres in length and features a unique sliding rear module. This allows for configurations that can switch between accommodating six passengers plus one additional seat and a four-seat arrangement with an open cargo area. The vehicle was presented during the Stellantis ‘Night Before’ event, where it was described as an exploration of maximising cabin space and functionality rather than a precursor to a specific production model.

At the heart of the Multiplay’s design is the C-pillar ‘Metamorfosi’ architecture. This innovative structure allows for seamless changes in vehicle layout. In its family-oriented format, it provides seating for six, plus a modular ‘Petsenger seat’. Alternatively, it can transform into a pick-up configuration with four seats and an open cargo bed, ideal for transporting larger items such as bicycles and sports equipment. The rear spoiler is multifunctional, rotating to serve as a bicycle rack that can hold up to two bicycles.

Modular and Flexible Cabin Features

The interior of the Multiplay showcases various modular features tailored to meet the dynamic needs of families. A standout element is the ‘Petsenger seat,’ which is designed to function as a child-seat anchoring point, a space for a pet, a small table, or a storage area. Its detachable cushion can also serve as a leash, and a foldable bowl is conveniently located in a door compartment. The design of the rear passenger area has been optimised to accommodate either two children and, if necessary, an adult in the rear compartment.

Another feature of interest is the ‘Sunseat’ arrangement, where the front passenger seat pivots to face the rear. In this position, it utilises the dashboard as a backrest for a lounge-like setting. Specifically designed for use when the vehicle is stationary, this feature provides a comfortable area to relax under the panoramic roof. The design incorporates generous glass surfaces, large side windows, and a panoramic roof, all aimed at fostering a sense of space while connecting the interior with the outside environment.

The concept also integrates practical materials. For instance, it employs stitch-free 3D-knitted monomaterial textiles aimed at reducing production waste. Furthermore, waterproof finishes in areas designated for children and pets are intended to improve usability and maintenance.

Heritage and Future Outlook

The Multiplay concept pays homage to Fiat’s legacy of optimising interior space within compact vehicle dimensions. The original Fiat 600 Multipla, unveiled in 1956, was capable of accommodating six passengers in a vehicle measuring around 3.5 metres. Similarly, the second-generation Multipla, introduced in 1998, provided seating for six in less than four metres. The Multiplay seeks to advance this philosophy through a more adaptable architecture that offers flexible passenger seating alongside cargo capabilities.

The concept was showcased by Olivier François, the Company Strategic Advisor for Stellantis, alongside Arnaud Belloni, who serves as the CEO of Fiat, Abarth, and Lancia brands, as well as the Chief Marketing Officer for Europe. While there are currently no plans to bring the Multiplay to market, the concept presents an insight into Fiat’s commitment to exploring versatile vehicle layouts and multifunctional interiors that cater to modern mobility challenges.
