Google Launches Fitbit Edge Fitness Tracker With OLED Display and Advanced Health Features

The CSR Journal Magazine

Google has introduced the Fitbit Edge, a cutting-edge fitness tracker aimed at individuals wishing to monitor their health without the bulk of a smartwatch. This device integrates fitness tracking, health insights, and a selection of smart features in a streamlined format. The Fitbit Edge boasts a larger display and built-in GPS compared to prior models, such as the Fitbit Air, and features a replaceable battery.

The Fitbit Edge is seen as a successor to the Fitbit Charge line, which has not been updated since the Fitbit Charge 6 was released in 2023. It offers a more rounded aesthetic, an expanded screen, and a physical side button, distinguishing it from both the screenless Fitbit Air and the more comprehensive Pixel Watch 5. Currently, the device is predominantly available in North America, Europe, and select Asian regions, with details regarding its Indian launch yet to be confirmed.

Constructed with sustainability in mind, the Fitbit Edge features a Hybrid OLED touchscreen that reportedly provides 46 per cent more viewing area than previous Fitbit models. The display is optimised for readability in sunlight and allows for customizable clock faces. The device measures 11.5mm in thickness and includes an aluminium body made from recycled materials, making it lighter than the Apple Watch Series 12.

Fitness and Health Tracking Capabilities

The Fitbit Edge supports over 50 exercise modes and provides real-time guidance for activities such as running and high-intensity interval training. The built-in GPS is claimed to have a 40 per cent improvement in tracking accuracy compared to earlier models. An altimeter is also present to track elevation changes during outdoor activities, while the tracker can automatically identify and record up to 100 types of workouts.

In terms of health monitoring, the device features an ECG app, continuous heart rate tracking, and a skin temperature sensor. It is capable of tracking various aspects of sleep, heart rate variability, and recovery metrics. Google’s Health Guardian functions reportedly monitor changes in blood pressure and insulin resistance, along with alerts for irregular heart rates. Some of these features require a Google Health Premium subscription for full access.

Battery life is a critical feature, with the Fitbit Edge promising up to seven days on a single charge. A brief five-minute magnetic charge is said to provide enough power for an entire day of use. The device is water-resistant up to 50 metres, making it suitable for various physical activities. Additionally, it is the first fitness tracker by Google designed with repairability in mind, featuring a modular internal layout and a replaceable battery to enhance longevity.

Pricing and Availability of Fitbit Edge

The Google Fitbit Edge has been set at an introductory price of $179.99 (approximately Rs 17,137) and is available for pre-order starting from October 12 via the Google Store and selected retail partners. The official sale is scheduled to begin on October 27. Purchasers will receive a complimentary three-month subscription to Google Health Premium.

The tracker comes in four distinct colour options: Obsidian with a matte black case, Fog with a polished silver finish, Olive with a satin pyrite case, and Canyon with a warm gold tone. Additionally, Google is offering a selection of interchangeable bands, such as Active Sport and Performance Loop.

For those seeking a unique model, Google has unveiled a Stephen Curry Special Edition Fitbit Edge, created in collaboration with the four-time NBA champion and Google Performance Advisor. This special edition is priced at $219.99 (around Rs 20,929) and features a striking combination of rye tones and vibrant game-day orange.
