Sri Lanka Name 15-Man Test Squad for Pakistan Series, Appoint Mendis Captain

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sri Lanka has officially announced a 15-member squad for their forthcoming ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan. This series will see the Asian team travel to Pakistan for two Test matches, scheduled to commence on November 9. The venues for these matches are Rawalpindi and Lahore, where both teams will compete for crucial points in the championship.

Kusal Mendis has been appointed as the captain of the squad. The selection committee has included experienced batter Pathum Nissanka, who is expected to return to full fitness before the first Test. Nissanka had missed Sri Lanka’s recent tour of India in August due to a wrist injury, which was a significant loss for the team as they faced a 1-0 series defeat in the two-match series.

Key Player Updates

In a notable development, Dilshan Madushanka has been recalled to the Test squad. Additionally, Eshan Malinga has also received a call-up. However, there is no place for right-handed opener Lahiru Udara, despite his impressive score of 188 against the West Indies in June. Niroshan Dickwella has also been excluded from the squad, indicating a shift in team strategy.

Uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Anjala Bandara has been included in the squad. At just 22 years of age, Anjala has played 31 first-class matches, accumulating 2,239 runs in 46 innings at an impressive average of 65.85. His record includes seven centuries and as many fifties, with a highest score of 200 not out, showcasing his potential as a significant addition to the team.

As the series approaches, Sri Lanka currently occupies the seventh position in the World Test Championship standings, having secured one win, suffered two losses, and drawn three matches, resulting in a points percentage of 33.33. In contrast, Pakistan finds itself at the bottom of the table with a points percentage of 4.63, having won two and lost seven Tests in this cycle.

Recent Performances

Pakistan’s recent performance has been disappointing, highlighted by a 0-3 whitewash against England during their tour in the UK. This has raised questions about their form and strategy going into the series against Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Sri Lanka faced a tough home series against India, where they managed to draw the second Test, thanks to twin centuries from Sonal Dinusha, which prevented a clean sweep by the two-time World Test Championship finalists.

The upcoming series presents an opportunity for both teams to improve their standings in the World Test Championship. Sri Lanka will aim to build on their recent performance and secure valuable points, while Pakistan will seek to rectify their form and gain momentum in the tournament.

The final squad for Sri Lanka includes Kusal Mendis (captain), Pathum Nissanka, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Sonal Dinusha, Dhananjaya De Silva, Anjala Bandara, Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Milan Rathnayaka, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka, and Eshan Malinga. As the teams prepare for the series, all eyes will be on the performance of both sides as they vie for crucial points in the championship.
