The CSR Journal Magazine

Body of a third-year undergraduate student of English was recovered at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University’s (JU) Gate No. 4 on Thursday night. The deceased has been identified as Anamika Mondal, a resident of North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal. A case of unnatural death has been registered and the area where the body was found has been sealed off for investigation.

The student was found in an unconscious condition on the banks of a pond near the university’s Arts Faculty Students’ Union (AFSU) room. Fellow students and security guards pulled her out and administered CPR. She was then rushed to the nearby KPC Medical College & Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

A cultural programme was going on at the Jadavpur University campus on Thursday evening organised by the ‘Drama Club’ which continued on campus till late night where Anamika was spotted in the evening. But she was later found lying unconscious around 10-10.30 pm. Some witnesses believe the music and crowds may have drowned out any cries for help. However, no clear information has been found yet on whether she died by drowning in the pond or on the way to the hospital. The body has been sent for autopsy. Police is investigating visuals of three CCTV cameras placed in front of Gate No. 4.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad demands thorough investigation, more CCTV cameras on campus

Kishaloy Roy and Tirtharaj Bardhan, on behalf of the university’s Trinamool Chhatra Parishad unit (TMCP), have demanded a ‘thorough investigation’ into the incident. They issued a statement asking why the cultural event was allowed to take place on campus until this late night. Questions have been raised on this issue.

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad state president Trinankur Bhattacharya posted his statement on social media. He wrote, ‘I am shocked by the news of the death of a student inside Jadavpur University. The incident took place near Gate No. 4, next to the SFI Union Room. This is very unfortunate. These are not natural deaths. Those who are against the installation of CCTV and police posting cannot avoid responsibility for this.’

Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader Sudeep Raha has spoken in almost the same tone. He wrote, “The need for CCTV in Jadavpur University has been proven once again.”

BJP leaders have also demanded a proper investigation into this incident.

Memories of 2023 JU fresher student death refreshed

The mysterious death of a student from the English department has once again created a stir among students and staff on the campus. The incident has brought back memories of the mysterious death of a Jadavpur University student back in 2023.

In August 2023, an 18-year-old first-year student at Jadavpur University (JU), Swapnodeep Kundu, died after falling from the second-floor balcony of the main hostel in Kolkata. His death, which occurred just two to three days after he moved into the hostel, was a result of alleged severe ragging by seniors and former students.

The incident took place on the night of August 9, 2023. Kundu died the next morning while undergoing treatment in the hospital. Minutes before his death, Kundu had reportedly called his mother and repeatedly begged her to come and pick him up from the hostel, telling her he was not well. His family alleges that he was a victim of sustained ragging and was in distress. He fell from the second-floor balcony of the main boys’ hostel, and his body was found without clothes.

Kundu’s father filed a police complaint, alleging that his son was the victim of a murder conspiracy orchestrated by senior students.

After a huge uproar over that incident, surveillance was increased on the university campus. There are many additional CCTV cameras. Although a section of students claim that I-cards are still not verified when entering the university.
