What began as an ordinary workday ended in unimaginable grief at a factory on the outskirts of Mehsana, where a truck driver accidentally caused the death of his own teenage son during a routine unloading operation.
The incident took place early Wednesday morning in Kadi taluka, near Indrad village, at Greenfield Derivatives Private Limited. A truck loaded with goods had arrived at the factory shortly before 7 am. At the wheel was 42-year-old Devaram Kumbharam Chaudhary, a native of Barmer district in Rajasthan. Beside him was his 19-year-old son, Mukanaram, who worked as his helper.
Father and son, who earned their livelihood together, had stepped onto the factory premises as they did every day. According to police, Devaram began reversing the truck to position it at the unloading point while Mukanaram stood behind, signalling and guiding the vehicle.
How the Accident Took Place?
During the manoeuvre, an iron stand suddenly shifted and became stuck between the wall and the unloading area. Mukanaram moved forward to remove the obstruction, unaware that the truck was still in motion. In those crucial seconds, Devaram continued reversing, not realising his son had stepped into danger.
The young man was caught between the truck, the iron stand, and the wall, suffering critical chest injuries. His cries alerted nearby factory workers, who rushed to the scene and immediately called for medical assistance. An ambulance was arranged without delay.
Mukanaram was taken to Kadini Kundal Civil Hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. By the time Devaram grasped what had happened, his son lay lifeless — a moment that witnesses described as shattering.
Incident Caught on Camera
The entire incident was recorded by CCTV cameras installed at the factory. The footage later emerged, leaving viewers disturbed by the suddenness of the tragedy.
Following the accident, Devaram approached the police himself and gave a detailed account of the events. A case has been registered at Nandasan Police Station under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Indian Penal Code, along with Sections 177 and 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
In a rare and heartbreaking legal situation, the father is both the complainant and the accused, having acknowledged that an error on his part led to the irreversible loss of his son.
