Harsh Malhotra, the President of the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has expressed his approval of the recent announcement made by the Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, to provide complimentary solar power systems to consumers who use up to 400 units of electricity. Malhotra conveyed his anticipation that this initiative will encourage residents of Delhi to embrace solar energy solutions and consider selling any excess power back to local power distribution companies, known as DISCOMs.

Cost Barrier Addressed by New Policy

Malhotra remarked, “The decision to implement free solar power systems is a testament to the BJP government’s forward-thinking strategy. The financial burden associated with installing solar power solutions has been a significant obstacle for both average and middle-class households.” He acknowledged that the Delhi government’s initiative to offer these systems at no cost addresses this critical barrier.

Moreover, he indicated that while the free distribution of solar systems may seem like an initial expense, it is expected to lead to considerable savings on electricity subsidies within the region. “This will not only recoup the costs associated with the distribution but also allow DISCOMs to procure more affordable electricity,” he stated.

Criticism of Previous Administration’s Efforts

In his statement, Malhotra also responded to claims made by a member of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who suggested that the government led by Arvind Kejriwal had previously launched a solar power scheme. He described this assertion as laughable, arguing that the Delhi Solar Power Scheme introduced in 2016 under Kejriwal’s leadership was similarly ineffective, similar to many other strategies proposed by the AAP.

As part of his critique, Malhotra highlighted the limited uptake of the scheme, noting that only about 5,350 consumers—ranging from small to larger electricity users—showed interest in the initiative over a span of nine years, from 2016 to 2024. “If there was any validity to Arvind Kejriwal’s assertion that the 2016 Delhi Solar Power Scheme was effective, an explanation is warranted as to why only a mere 5,350 consumers engaged with the scheme during this period,” he remarked.

Anticipation of Increased Public Engagement

Harsh Malhotra emphasised the potential positive shift in public attitude towards solar energy as a result of the new initiative. He suggested that once residents observe the benefits, including reduced electricity costs and the opportunity to earn from surplus energy, more individuals may take an active interest in renewable energy solutions.

This move aligns with broader efforts aimed at enhancing the sustainability of energy consumption in Delhi, coupled with financial incentives aimed at making solar energy accessible to a wider segment of the population.

Malhotra’s remarks reflect a commitment to ongoing dialogue regarding energy policies in the national capital, as the BJP positions itself as a proactive stakeholder in promoting renewable energy alternatives and addressing long-standing issues related to electricity supply and costs.
