Himachal Pradesh Receives 98,719 Applications for 1088 Police Constable Positions

The government of Himachal Pradesh has reported receiving a total of 98,719 applications for 1,088 police constable roles, encompassing both male and female candidates. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu announced that the application deadline will not be extended, despite previous requests during the ongoing monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.

The announcement was made in response to queries regarding the possibility of prolonging the application submission window. According to data from the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC), the recruitment announcement was made on July 10, 2026, with an initial deadline of August 6. During this initial timeframe, approximately 65,000 candidates submitted their applications.

In response to the demand for more applicants, the state government implemented a one-time age relaxation policy allowing an additional year for all candidates. Consequently, the deadline was extended by 15 days, until August 21. This extension led to a further influx of applications, with around 11,000 more candidates applying, which raised the total to approximately 77,000.

In a further move to encourage participation, the government offered a five-year age relaxation specifically for employees of the Himachal Pradesh government. This adjustment also included another 15-day extension to the application period, with the revised closing date set for September 15.

As of September 1, the Chief Minister confirmed that the total number of received applications had risen to 98,719 for the constable positions. The HPPSC clarified that it would not consider any further extensions, emphasising that additional delays could disrupt the timing of the physical assessments and the overall recruitment timeline.

Notably, the Commission addressed certain claims regarding technical difficulties with its online application portal, stating that the platform was functioning efficiently without any significant issues.

In accordance with the established recruitment regulations, the Physical Standard Test (PST) and the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) for the constable positions will take place across all 12 districts of the state, conducted by the Police Department. The HPPSC expressed concern that extending the application deadline further may delay the entire recruitment process, especially given the approaching winter season in Himachal Pradesh.

The Commission estimated that the recruitment process may take approximately six months or more to complete, reinforcing its decision against further extensions to the application deadline. The prompt commencement of physical testing and subsequent selection processes is viewed as crucial to maintaining the overall schedule, thereby ensuring recruitment is completed in a timely manner.
