EVM Randomisation Completed Across All 35 Districts in Assam Ahead of 2026 Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

The initial randomisation of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) for the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections, scheduled for 2026, has been successfully completed. This event took place across all 35 districts, encompassing a total of 126 Assembly Constituencies. The randomisation was conducted in the offices of the District Election Officers (DEOs) on Wednesday, with representatives from recognised National and State Political Parties present to ensure the process’s transparency.

Importance of EVMs and VVPATs in Election Integrity

The random allocation of EVMs and Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs) forms a fundamental part of the electoral framework. Utilizing the EVM Management System (EMS), this procedure guarantees that machines are randomly assigned to various Assembly Constituencies. Such measures are designed to promote fairness, eliminate the potential for bias, and enhance the overall integrity of the election process. The involvement of political representatives during this exercise serves to further instill confidence in the transparency of the electoral machinery.

Commitment to Free and Fair Elections

The Election machinery in Assam has reiterated its dedication to conducting elections that are free, fair, and transparent, adhering strictly to the established guidelines of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The upcoming elections will take place in a single phase on April 9, with the counting of votes slated for May 4, as announced by the ECI.

Upcoming Elections and Political Landscape

The elections in Assam will see competition for all 126 Assembly constituencies, with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) facing off against the Congress party. The incumbent government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is aiming for a third consecutive term, while the Congress party seeks to reclaim power after their previous tenure. The state of Assam will join West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry in holding legislative assembly elections, all commencing on April 9.
