Eighteen Senior MBBS Students Suspended for Ragging at Gorakhpur’s BRD Medical College

The CSR Journal Magazine

The administration at BRD Medical College in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has initiated disciplinary measures against eighteen senior MBBS students in response to serious allegations of ragging directed towards junior students. This action was taken on Thursday after the college received a second directive from the National Medical Commission (NMC), which called for urgent intervention and the submission of a follow-up report.

The Principal and Dean confirmed that the students have been suspended from all campus activities, including classrooms and hostel facilities, for one month. Each student has also been penalised with a fine of Rs 25,000. This prompt response is part of the college’s commitment to maintaining a safe educational environment.

The college administration is actively monitoring the situation to ensure the security and well-being of all students within the institution. The allegations include severe mental harassment and verbal abuse reportedly endured by junior students residing in the Rajendra Hostel, dating back to incidents between May 12 and May 14.

Investigation Triggered by Formal Complaints

The inquiry into the incidents began following a formal complaint submitted via email to both the National Medical Commission and the University Grants Commission. According to reports, junior students alleged that they were subjected to various forms of intimidation and threats by senior students. This included being forced to stand for extended periods and experiencing inappropriate behaviour alongside derogatory language.

In response to the directives issued by the NMC on May 23, the college’s Anti-Ragging Squad and Anti-Ragging Committee launched an immediate investigation. Emergency meetings were convened on May 26 and 27 to address the situation, during which the accused students were summoned for questioning. The investigations aimed to gather comprehensive insights into the gravity of the claims made by the junior students.

During the meetings, the committee made a unanimous decision to impose the one-month suspension and corresponding penalties on the identified students. Additionally, two female resident students were issued formal warning notices for their involvement in the incidents but were not subjected to the same level of sanction as their senior counterparts.

Student Distribution and Further Actions

The eighteen students involved in the allegations represent various academic cohorts. Specifically, ten students are from the 2024 batch, while the remaining eight are from the 2023 and 2022 batches. The proportional involvement of these groups highlights the extent of the alleged ragging practices taking place within the institution.

The college plans to maintain stringent measures to prevent further incidents of ragging and to uphold a supportive environment for all students. Communication with the NMC will continue as per their requirements, ensuring transparency and accountability in the proceedings following this incident.

This proactive approach seeks not only to discipline those involved but also to foster a culture of respect and safety within the academic community at BRD Medical College. As the administration embarks on implementing these measures, the overall atmosphere in the institution will be closely observed to affirm that no such incidents recur in the future.
