At least eight individuals have reportedly died, and 25 others are receiving medical treatment after being affected by suspected spurious liquor in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, on August 21. According to Bhavnagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Akshar Vyas, the official records list a total of 61 individuals who have been affected. The situation has prompted immediate medical attention and further investigation into the sources of the illicit liquor.

Out of the affected, 10 individuals were discharged from the hospital on August 20, while another 18 were evaluated but did not require hospital admission. Vyas clarified the current status, noting, “A total of 61 individuals have been verified in our records; of these, 25 are currently undergoing treatment, while 10 were discharged yesterday. There have been eight deaths according to our records.”

The medical team is actively working to gather more information regarding those affected, sending blood samples to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis. Officials plan to determine appropriate actions based on the laboratory findings after they are made available in the coming days.

Response from Local Authorities

Bhavnagar City Tehsildar and Executive Magistrate Kishan B Chandaliya remarked on the situation, highlighting the swift arrangements for immediate medical treatment for those impacted. “There are over 61 affected individuals. Arrangements were made for their immediate medical treatment. Yesterday, five new cases were reported, while 10 patients recovered and were discharged; there were eight deaths, and 25 people are currently undergoing treatment, out of whom five are in a more critical condition,” he stated.

Chandaliya confirmed that the administration had coordinated efforts with local hospitals to ensure the best possible care for the affected individuals. In light of the unfolding events, the local healthcare system has been mobilised to handle the casualties and provide necessary support to the families of those affected.

In statements to the press, Vyas emphasised that the administration, in collaboration with the medical college and local hospital, undertook extensive measures aimed at saving lives. He noted that all individuals fit for discharge were sent home promptly, while critical cases continued to receive specialised care.

Political Reactions and Ongoing Investigation

Mevani expressed condolences to the grieving families while calling for accountability from the state’s officials. He indicated a need for changes within the Gujarat government, particularly requesting the resignation of the Home Minister. His statement drew attention to the perceived lack of action and oversight in preventing hazardous illegal activities that jeopardise public safety.

As the investigation progresses, local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates as new information emerges. The community remains on alert while health professionals remain committed to addressing the urgent needs of those affected and preventing further tragedies of this nature.
