ED Conducts Raids at Multiple Locations in West Bengal Over Illegal Call Centre Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) executed search operations at ten sites throughout West Bengal on Monday as part of an investigation into an alleged illegal call centre operation. The raids took place in various cities including Siliguri, Howrah, Bidhannagar, and Durgapur. The agency’s actions were prompted by specific intelligence concerning individuals related to the case, which falls under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Targeted Searches of Suspected Associates

Officials stated that the searches were being conducted at the residences and workplaces of individuals believed to be connected to the illegal call centre activities. Notable individuals targeted in these raids include Surashree Kar, Samrat Ghosh, and Subhajit Chakraborty. The officials, who chose to remain unnamed, indicated that the objective of these searches is to gather crucial evidence and trace financial transactions linked to suspected fraudulent operations.

Investigative Focus on Financial Irregularities

As part of the ongoing investigation, the ED is expected to scrutinize documents, digital devices, and other pertinent materials found during the raids. This effort aims to establish links to financial misconduct associated with the call centre network. The ED has made it clear that the operation is part of a broader inquiry into the mechanisms of alleged money laundering and related offenses.

Parallel Developments in Delhi

In a related matter, the ED also addressed a different case involving Lalu Prasad Yadav, the chief of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), in a Delhi court. The ED has submitted that it possesses adequate evidence to substantiate charges against Yadav and several individuals affiliated with him, including family members, in connection with a land-for-job money laundering case. The agency asserts that the evidence indicates that the proceeds of crime were exploited by the accused parties.

Upcoming Court Proceedings

During recent court proceedings at the Rouse Avenue court, the ED articulated its position before Special Judge Vishal Gogne regarding the framing of charges in the land-for-job scandal. Following discussions on the agency’s arguments, the court has scheduled further hearings for the accused individuals from March 23 to March 30. The court previously issued summons to sixteen individuals involved in the case, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav, as well as businessman Amit Katyal, known for his close ties to the former railways minister.
