Devendra Mahato Ends Hunger Strike After Jharkhand Government Cancels Exams

The CSR Journal Magazine

Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato concluded his indefinite hunger strike following the Jharkhand government’s announcement regarding the cancellation of the JSSC Combined Graduate Level (JSSC-CGL) examination and other recruitment processes associated with TSR Data Processing Private Limited (TDPL). This decision came in response to significant protests from students over alleged irregularities in the examination processes.

In his reaction, Mahato stressed the importance of establishing laws to safeguard students from potential fraud. He asserted that a legislative framework should be enacted to ensure that no student faces deception or dishonesty. “The government should guarantee this,” he emphasised.

Mahato extended his gratitude to fellow students, their families, media representatives, law enforcement, and the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, Hemant Soren, for their support during the agitation. “We appreciate that the students’ concerns were taken seriously and that our demands have been met,” he stated.

Government Cancels TDPL Examinations

On August 17, Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced that all examinations facilitated by TDPL, including results previously published, would be annulled. He clarified that any examinations and recruitment processes conducted through TDPL are now void.

Soren also ordered an investigation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) into all examinations carried out by TDPL since 2014. This development took place amidst a large protest at Jaipal Singh Munda Ground in Ranchi centring on grievances regarding irregularities and allegations concerning the JSSC-CGL.

The Chief Minister’s announcement provided vital responses to ongoing student protests that had escalated since their inception on July 25. Demonstrators had expressed concerns over integrity in examination processes, leading to the eventual mass mobilisation against the agency.

Students React to Government Decision

Students celebrated enthusiastically at the protest site following Soren’s confirmation of the cancellations. The atmosphere was filled with moments of joy as protesters applauded one another, some shedding tears of happiness. The victorious mood was marked by chants and a shared sense of winning their demands.

Prominent student leaders, Umme Habiba and Rahul Kranti, also ended their hunger strike at Sadar Hospital, where they were welcomed by Jharkhand Ministers Dipika Pandey Singh and Irfan Ansari. Their decision came as a direct result of the government’s actions, which included the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination and the advocacy for transparency in ongoing investigations.

The primary demands from the protesting students included the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam and a comprehensive inquiry, with many advocating for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities. While the government has initiated a CID investigation, full satisfaction on the demand for a CBI inquiry remains unfulfilled.

Protest Timeline and Future Actions

The agitation commenced on July 25, originating from a small assembly of students at Vapu Batika Ground in Ranchi. This initial gathering was prompted by accusations of irregularities in both the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and JSSC-CGL examinations. The protest rapidly evolved into a larger movement, amassing considerable attention and participation.

Numerous students joined Mahato in his hunger strike, which symbolised their serious commitment to rectify the issues surrounding the examinations. The growth of this movement highlighted significant concerns regarding fairness and transparency within the education system.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk praised the efforts of Mahato and his colleagues, acknowledging their unwavering dedication throughout the protest. Wangchuk also commended Chief Minister Soren for engaging with the demands of the students, reiterating the importance of accountability in education.
