Delhi Government Increases LPG Supply for Migrants Amid Shortage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi government has announced a significant increase in the LPG supply for migrant workers, raising the daily quota from 180 to 360 commercial cylinders. This decision, made public on Tuesday, aims to address ongoing supply challenges and prioritise the needs of those affected.

Food and Civil Supplies Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa elaborated on the new daily cap of 6,480 commercial LPG cylinders, each weighing 19 kilograms. The focus will remain on essential sectors and vulnerable populations who are in dire need of these resources.

In an effort to manage logistics effectively, oil marketing companies have reportedly been instructed to follow this cap strictly. They are also expected to redistribute any surplus from one category to another after satisfying the primary demand for LPG cylinders.

Details of the Distribution Plan

The revised allocation plan will ensure that migrant workers and students receive 360 cylinders daily. Additionally, 1,368 smaller 5-kilogram free-trade LPG cylinders will be made available to facilitate better access for users. Distribution will be managed through authorised agencies with mandatory Aadhaar verification to maintain accountability.

A centralised database will be implemented to avoid duplication of benefits, which is intended to ensure that each individual receives the cylinders they need without overlap. To further regulate distribution, a minimum interval of seven days between refills for the same person has been established.

In a move towards greater flexibility, the government has allowed the allocation to be adjusted across different categories. However, this is contingent on fulfilling the legitimate demand within all segments before any diversion of cylinders takes place. Updated operational guidelines have also been released to enhance the overall efficiency of supply logistics.

Priority Sectors and Government Commitment

The allocation of LPG cylinders will be categorised by priority sectors. Educational institutions and healthcare facilities will collectively receive 225 cylinders, while government bodies and community kitchens will also be allocated 225. Other categories, including hotels, food processing units, and labour-intensive industries, will receive 3,375 and 1,800 cylinders, respectively.

Sirsa highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent distribution process. He warned that strict measures would be enforced against any forms of hoarding or black marketing. Reports suggesting a gas shortage in the market have been termed unfounded, with the minister urging consumers to rely solely on authorised channels for bookings.

Overall, this increase in LPG supply is expected to alleviate the burden on availability in the capital, particularly assisting migrant workers, students, and small businesses, while stabilising supply in critical sectors. The newly implemented measures reflect the government’s effort to maintain a steady and equitable distribution of essential resources across Delhi.
