The Delhi government has initiated the process to create a State Disaster Emergency Relief Force (SDERF) in New Delhi, as stated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. This decision aims to establish a robust and trained response mechanism to address disaster situations effectively. The announcement was made on September 10, 2026, through a post by the Chief Minister’s Office on the social media platform X.

During a meeting held at the Delhi Secretariat, Chief Minister Gupta coordinated with senior officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to gather essential inputs for the formation of the SDERF. The initiative is a crucial step towards enhancing the city’s ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to emergencies.

In her comments, CM Gupta highlighted the importance of this initiative in improving disaster preparedness and responsiveness. The government seeks to implement a capable and rapid response system, ensuring that the residents of Delhi have immediate assistance available during crisis situations.

Response to Recent Tragedy at Satya Niketan

This initiative follows a tragic incident involving the collapse of a five-storeyed building in Satya Niketan, located near Delhi University’s South Campus. The incident resulted in the deaths of seven people and left several others injured, prompting urgent discussions on improving safety measures and disaster management in the area.

CM Gupta expressed gratitude towards the NDRF for their prompt and coordinated efforts during the relief operations post-collapse, acknowledging their dedication on behalf of the residents of Delhi. The CM’s remarks underscore the need for a more structured approach to disaster management in the capital.

In response to the building collapse, the Chief Minister has directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to enhance enforcement against illegal constructions throughout the city. This proactive measure aims to prevent future incidents that may arise from unauthorized and unsafe building practices.

Heightened Scrutiny of Illegal Constructions

Following her directive, Chief Minister Gupta has instructed senior MCD officials to take active roles in overseeing demolition actions against illegal structures. A statement from the Delhi government indicated that demolition drives are expected in multiple areas where violations have been identified.

The crackdown will specifically target paying guest (PG) accommodations and hostels that have not adhered to building regulations. CM Gupta has emphasised the necessity for comprehensive inspections of these establishments to ensure compliance with safety standards.
