Dehradun’s ‘Upside-Down’ School is Rewriting the Rules of Learning

The CSR Journal Magazine

A small school located in the village of Katapatthar, near Dehradun, is transforming the conventional perception of classroom learning. In this unique educational setting, the boundaries of learning extend far beyond traditional four walls, taking place amid the lush greenery and natural surroundings that define the area. The initiative is part of a programme called Surah, which translates to “a meaningful path,” and aims to revolutionise early education by integrating real-world experiences with traditional learning methods.

The school caters to approximately 70 children, ranging from nursery to Class 5, and distinguishes itself through its commitment to fostering curiosity and engagement with the environment. Teachers employ a philosophy that positions them not just as instructors, but as facilitators who learn together with their students. This interactive approach encourages children to explore their surroundings actively, enriching their educational experience.

Rather than adhering strictly to textbooks, students engage in hands-on learning opportunities, such as studying local flora and fauna, observing insects in their natural habitats, and understanding seasonal cycles. This experiential learning model is designed to strengthen children’s connections with the world around them.

Founder’s Vision and Philosophy

The driving force behind this initiative is Shrey Rawat, who grew up in Vikasnagar, a town within Dehradun district. Rawat’s experiences have shaped his understanding of education in hilly regions, where traditional methods often overlook the cultural and environmental context of students. In 2023, he decided to establish a learning environment that emphasises inquiry and experiential education, departing from the conventional urban lifestyle.

The school has gained local recognition as the “ulta-pulta” or “upside-down” school, a term casually used by residents. This unconventional nomenclature reflects the school’s non-traditional pedagogical approach, which prioritises critical thinking and experiential learning over rote memorisation. Students are encouraged to pose questions and relate their lessons to real-life contexts, fostering a culture of curiosity.

Savita Bhatt, a teacher at the institution, shares insights on the educational model’s efficacy. She notes that while traditional systems often confine learning within textbooks, this innovative approach integrates academic and environmental learning seamlessly. According to her, students not only learn abstract concepts but also appreciate their practical applications, enhancing their cognitive and emotional development.

Students’ Transformative Experiences

The enthusiasm of the students at this school echoes the success of this educational approach. Paridhi Tomar, one of the pupils, expressed her appreciation for the unique learning opportunities available. She remarked that the integration of nature into their studies makes education both enjoyable and relevant. The connections between academic subjects and their natural surroundings breathe life into the learning process.

Another student, Kavya Verma, recounted an engaging lesson focused on grains conducted in nearby fields. As part of this lesson, students measured the height of plants and studied the insects in the area. Kavya noted that such practical exercises offer a superior understanding of the topics being taught, which she finds particularly meaningful.

This innovative school in Katapatthar serves as a compelling example of an alternative educational framework that prioritises experiential learning over conventional methodologies. As educational reforms take centre stage in India, such initiatives underscore a crucial shift in the definition of education, positioning it as a catalyst for creativity and deeper comprehension of life beyond mere information acquisition.
