The Border Security Force (BSF) achieved a major breakthrough against cross-border smuggling near the India-Bangladesh border in Malda district, seizing gold worth over ₹1 crore cleverly concealed inside a bicycle tire. However, the suspected smuggler managed to escape during the operation.
Intelligence Leads to High-Value Interception
The seizure, conducted by the 119 Battalion of the BSF under the South Bengal Frontier, was executed based on specific intelligence. On November 26, 2025, the BSF received a confidential tip-off indicating that an attempt to smuggle gold would be made by a local person through the area near the M.S. Pur Border Outpost.
Acting swiftly, the troops immediately intensified their surveillance and placed the entire border zone under heightened alertness.
Suspicion Raised by Swollen Bicycle Tyre
The operation came to a head at approximately 1456 hours when BSF personnel spotted a suspicious individual approaching the international border on a bicycle.
The troops intercepted the suspect and began a thorough inspection of the vehicle.
During the search, the bicycle’s front tire was noted to be unusually swollen and rigid, immediately raising the troops’ suspicion. As the BSF personnel prepared to conduct a more detailed examination of the tire, the suspect exploited the moment to make his escape. Abandoning the bicycle on the spot, he fled rapidly towards a nearby densely populated area.
Gold Biscuits Recovered
Following the successful evasion, a comprehensive search operation was launched across the area, but the smuggler could not be apprehended.
Upon dismantling the suspicious bicycle tire, the BSF recovered seven gold biscuits hidden within. The total weight of the seized gold is reported to be 816.41 grams, with an estimated market value calculated at ₹1,02,40,230/-.
The seized gold has been handed over to the concerned agency for necessary legal action and to facilitate further investigation into the smuggling network.
