Congress MP Jairam Ramesh Calls for Debate on West Asia Conflict and US Oil Purchases

The CSR Journal Magazine

In New Delhi, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has urged for a parliamentary debate concerning the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the recent 30-day waiver granted by the United States for India to purchase Russian oil. As the Budget Session 2026 is set to resume, Ramesh emphasized the need for an in-depth discussion rather than a simple statement from the government.

He criticized the Centre’s response to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s remarks labeling India as a “good actor,” alleging that it reflects a lack of assertiveness on India’s part.

Concerns on Geopolitical Issues

Speaking with reporters, Ramesh voiced that various pressing geopolitical matters, including the West Asia conflict, would be brought up in Parliament. He pointed out that tensions have extended beyond West Asia, underscoring an incident in which an Iranian vessel was attacked while returning from Visakhapatnam.

Ramesh also mentioned the dissatisfaction of Indian farmers towards the United States, particularly in light of a hefty 126 percent duty imposed on solar module exports despite prior agreements.

US Waiver on Russian Oil Purchase

On the issue of Russian oil procurement, Ramesh criticized the US’s recent announcement of a 30-day waiver, during which India is allowed to buy sanctioned Russian oil. The US labeled India as a “loyal” ally for adhering to their stipulations. Ramesh questioned the government’s commitment to its independence, referring to the recent comments from US officials and expressing concern over the lack of parliamentary conversation regarding these foreign policy challenges. He noted that while the government provided statements, opportunities for MPs to ask clarifying questions were severely limited.

Discussion on No Confidence Motion Against Speaker

Ramesh also highlighted a No Confidence Motion filed against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, recalling the historical precedent of a similar motion against GV Mavalankar, the first Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He praised former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for promoting a democratic process by allowing more time for opposition voices in Parliament. He stated that 118 MPs backed the current No Confidence Motion, underscoring the dissatisfaction with Speaker Birla’s management of parliamentary procedures.

Pending Issues in the Budget Session

The second phase of the Budget Session, scheduled to commence on March 9, has three Congress MPs intending to propose a resolution calling for the removal of Speaker Om Birla. Ramesh accused Birla of partiality and raising “unwarranted allegations” against women MPs from opposition parties.

This motion has recently gained traction, with support from Trinamool Congress (TMC) members who had previously been hesitant to join the opposition’s efforts. The dynamics of the upcoming session could influence critical discussions on government accountability and geopolitical actions affecting India.
